About the Journal

Here we write about what we have done so you can all read about it.

Abu Dhabi

On Wednesday 20th May we left the hotel at 6.30am to get to Heathrow airport in time for a traditional full English Breakfast. After a few tears we left to get on our first flight to Abu Dhabi with a stop over in Bahrain. Bahrain was where we were first introduced to dodgy toilets! Wont say anymore. We arrived in Abu Dhabi at 10.35pm where our friend Davey collected us and took us back to her appartment.

The next day we woke up at 10am and kirsty rushed to use her new travel soap while i brushed my teeth with warm water - something you don't get used to!! While Davey went to work we both decided to brave it outside, we got approx 100 meters and were roasted!! After an hour we went back inside to allow our bodies time to adjust to the 45 degree climate. Later that afternoon we went to the beach and swam in the warm sea. Afterwards kirsty experienced her first Baskin Robbins ice cream!

On Friday we went to a Champagne Brunch at the Crown Plaza hotel. The brunch consisted of free food, free alcohol and constant glass top ups! When we ordered our last round of Majitos Davey complained to the manager that there wasn't enough alcohol in them so the waitor came to our table with a bottle of Rum and topped us all up :-) Good one Davey! After this we went to a roof top pool bar for some more drinks shortly followed by a nightclub. After a good KFC we proceeded to grab a nearby ladder to enter a closed swimming pool on the roof of Daveys building - shhhhh

To stop the hangover Caroline had a sausage and bacon bap and i had a cooked breakfast curtesy of Jamie and Davey. Then we spent the day at the beach somehow managing not to get burnt lol. In the evening we went for a bbq on Daveys friends roof and played guitar hero.

On Sunday we went to Dubai and spent the day at a water park called Wild Wadi. There was a lady drowning next to us and we thought she was playing around so we ignored her, moments later the lifeguard jumped in to rescue her he he he oops. Afterwards we went to Dubai mall for some retail therapy.

Davey took us to her beach club on Monday were just lazied around the pool TRYING and i emphasise the TRYING to get a tan within frying.

We flagged down a taxi on Tuesday to take us to the Meena Center. This is a shopping mall with an activity center near by :-) We did attempt the visit the fruit and veg market but were too late, what a shame. In the evening we visited the Emirates Palace, very pretty from the outside lol!

Wednesday we sent a few postcards and in the evening we went out to the Lebanise Flower to experience the Arabic cuisine.

Thursday - fly to Bahrain, Mumbai and finally Bangalore!

India

Got to Bangalore on Friday after getting drunk at Bahrain airport, eating curry at 2am on the plane and having no sleep on our flights at all. From Bangalore we got on a train straight to Mysore where we stayed in a hostel shared with a gekko and lots of ants.

The next day we decided to leave lol the city wasnt really for us. We got a train back to Bangalore and stayed in a hostel with a family of rats and a very strange man who kept knocking on our door.

On Sunday we got a sleeper train to Hampi which was an experience in itself. We were in a tiny space with 7 Indian men and slept on our bags to keep them safe. We spent 4 days in Hampi looking at the temples and ruins and feeding the monkeys. Would def recommend Hampi to everyone.

Left for Goa on Thursday 6:30am. The train journey was one of the best so far, the people in the carriage were lovely and the scenery was amazing! We passed Dudhsagar Falls, wow, thats a picture we will never forget! There was miles and miles of untouched land, big green mountains and not a rickshaw, bike or car in sight.

Our train dropped us in Margao where we got a rickshaw to our hostel "Paul Rina". This was the cleanest and the cheapest hostel so far, 250 rupees (1.75 pounds). No rats, Gekkos or Ants - heaven!

The next few days we spent on the beach enjoying the sun and taking advantage of the beers and cocktails on offer. Even saw some cows swimming in the sea - WTF!

6th June, Saturday morning was interesting. We had a little incident involving Caroline, a toilet and a cockroach - say no more lol. Later on we walked to Colva which is a neaby town and sent some postcards home.

The monsoon caught up with us, lots of rain and strong winds. We decided to book our next train tickets to Aurangubad on Monday 8th June. The journey was long (19 hours) and cramped but once we got there and found our hostel it was all worth it.

We stayed in a place called the "Tourist Home", it was heaven, no, it was more then heaven. It was super clean, no animals, electricity, hot water, quiet fan, an english tv and most importantly A REAL TOILET!

On Wednesday we hired a rickshaw for the day and went to Ellora Caves, they were impressive! After a great day out we went back to Aurangubad for something to eat. We met an Indian man in the restaurant and had a normal conversation with him. Upon returning to our hotel the man we met earlier was stood waiting for us. He kept demanding to know our room number, in the end Caroline got grumpy and shouted at him, he soon backed off lol

On Friday we decide to go on our first organised tour, Ajanta Caves. Luckily we found a really good company "Classic" who provided "luxury" buses. The word luxury is used very lightly. We left at 8.30am and returned at 5.30pm - two and a half hour journey each way. The caves were good but were slightly dissappointed to find out that of the 30 caves only4 of them have painings in them.

After trying several times to book a train out of Aurangabad and not having any luck we decide to go with the bus option. We were very hesitent about getting on the bus as it was packed and nowhere to put our bags. The ticket man picked up on this and gave up his seat at the front of the bus. With our VIP treatment the bus journey wasn't so bad and we arrived early in Jalgoan.

After a couple of relaxing days in Jalgoan we got a train to Jabalpur arriving at 6am on Wednesday 17th, from there we got a 7am bus to Kanha. The six hour bus journey was very bumpy to say the least! On arrival we checked out the accommadation in Kanha National Park, it was very expensive so we decided to stay in the local town called Kisli. After many rejections from hotel managers we found a quiet little place that offered cheap rooms and jeep safaris.

On Thursday 18th we wake up at 4am and set of on our Jeep safari - it was so exciting! We were very lucky and were giving two of the most experienced guide and driver. We saw so many different animals including deers, cows, wild dogs, birds and monkeys. We then went on an elephant ride to see a tiger that was sat at the edge of a water hole. We got soo close, not that we were scared or anything lol

After a wicked day we get the bus back to Jabalpur where Caroline recieved her first injury - tripped over the concrete pavment and gave herself a black toe. In Jabalpur we decided to splash out on an expensive hotel, Kalchuri Residency. It was about 20 pounds a night but was well worth it. We stayed here for three nights as both of us were poorly, maybe something we ate in Kanha?!

On Sunday 21st we checked out of the posh hotel and walked to the train station only to realise that we were a day early for our train to Allahabad. We then had to return to the posh hotel and explain how stupid we had been - very embarrissing! On Monday 22nd we repeated the exercise again - this was our first first class train. OMG this was where we had been going wrong - it's all about the posh hotels and first class trains!

By the time we arrived in Allahabad it was about 9pm and pitch black, this was a good excuse to stay in another posh hotel! I mean we wouldnt want us walking down the backstreets trying to find somewhere to stay would we?!

Hotel Regency, a 3 star luxuary haven! It was 40 pounds (20 pounds each) a night but it included buffet breakfast, swimming pool, gym, sauna and steam room. We stayed in a studio appartment with views over the swimming pool. It had powerful AC and a TV with lots of English channels, oh and we had complimentary English newspapers each morning.

On Tuesday 23rd we walked to the train station where we booked our next train to Agra. After that we got a rickshaw to the Sangum (where the Ganges and Yamuna rivers meet) except he didn't take us there... he dropped us in the middle of nowhere and started demanding more money. Conveniantly he stopped where there was a big group of his friends - grr. After lots of walking we made it to the Sangum where we had a nice boat trip. We said a pray and released some cocunuts for our families health, afterwards we washed our faces in the water (gross) and were given a bindi.

On the way back to the hotel we had exactly the same probelms with the rickshaw driver, luckily this time they dropped us near a McDonalds - which kirsty preceeded to run into. We never knew chips tasted sooo good! A few hours later we found our way home pasing a .... DOMINOS! Well it would be rude not to have gone in!

On Wednesday 24th we checked out of our gorgeous hotel after lots of swimming and got a sleeper train to Agra.

We arrived in Agra at 7am and got a taxi to our hotel, Sheela. It was very busy so we had to wait until 10am to check into our room. After a little siesta we went to the Taj Mahal - AMAZING! We sat there for a few hours watching it change colour as the sun set.

On Friday 26th we had fried eggs for breakfast and then booked all of our remaining train tickets for India - less stressful that way. After doing our chores we went to the Bazaar for some retail therapy. We bought some funky PJ like trousers which are very cool for travelling in.

Saturday 27th we got a sleeper train to Jaisalmer which was delayed 4 hours, not fun! On arrival we got coned by a young boy and taken to the wrong hotel. On the way to the hotel we spoke to some other travellers who recommended the camel safaris from the wrong hotel we were being taken to. We took their advice and stayed at the wrong hotel and booked a 3 day 2 night safari with them. That evening we walked to the neaby market to get some clothes ready for the safari the following morning.

On Monday we were up at the crack of dawn preparing our stuff for the camel trek. After breakfast we were taken in a Jeep to meet our camels. Carolines was called Victoria and Kirstys was called Sonia. Camels are such big, strange animals and boy do they fart a lot!

We shared our safari with a girl from Holland and a boy from the USA. Our guide, well he was just mental but in a good way! Everyday we would ride from 7-11.30am and then again from 3-6pm, our guide cooked us three gorgeous meals a day and sang songs to us each evening.

We slept under the stars with no tent or canvas just a little blanket. The first night we were on a big sand dune away from everything which was really nice but on the second night we were close to the bushes which attracted big beatles (they decided to share kirstys blanket which she wasn't very pleased about).

After three days in the desert we have very sore bottoms, sun burnt and ready for a shower to remove the sand. We return to collect or bags and decide to find a posh hotel, thats when we were introduced to FORT RAJWADA!! OMG!! On arrival we were given flower necklaces, given free drinks and face flannels. Needless to say it cost about 5000 rupees (66 pounds) a night.... we agreed!!

After a great nights sleep we decide to take full advantage for the swimming pool and gym before we caught our train that evening. Sleeper train 17.15pm arriving at Delhi 11am.

When we arrive in Delhi on 3rd July we made our way to the tourist office where we bumped into some rugby friends from England - was great to see a friendly face! They let us leave our bags in their hotel and we spend the day with them shopping, using the metro system, sitting in coffee cafes and relaxing in the park. Unfortunately we had to leave them as we had a bus to catch at 9pm.

We turn up at 9pm to catch our bus and it turns out the ticket people had a scam going telling people the bus was AC, making them pay more and then providing a crap non AC bus. Lots of people were mad so the police were called and they told them to provide an AC bus, finally we get on the road at 11pm, 2 hours later than expected!

On Saturday 4th July we arrived in Nainital, the place is beautiful. It's a small town with a lake in the middle surrounded by green mountains - it's so quiet and clean! After locating somewhere to stay and depositing our bags we checked out the High Altitude Zoo followed by a pedalow on the lake (great fun). Later we walked down the Mall for some retail therapy, Caroline brought yet more jewelery!

The next day we woke up early as we were trekking up to China Peak (2611m). We started off getting a cable car 2km up but because of the morning mist we were unable to see the views below. From there we trekked to Nainal Peak and then China Peak. We weren't able to get any good pictures but we did manage to get a video of Kirsty falling over which i think more than makes up for it lol

MONDAY 6TH JULY We bought our tickets to china (twice lol) and spent about 4 hours in the internet trying to sort it but couldnt. In the evening we caught the overnight bus back to Delhi and Kirsty was sick out the window of the bus.

7TH when we got to Delhi we went on the nice clean metro again and then got a rickshaw to the station. Once we got on the train we found out it was the posh rajdhani all a/c train with 5 indian meals a day included! Needless to say we spent our 3 days and two nights on there eating curry and making ourselves feel ill lol. Indian people eat a whole pot of sour cream each with lunch and dinner which we found a little odd. We had really good seats as our beds were at the side by the aisle so we had our own little curtains for each bed and a little table that folded out when we turned the bottom bunk from a bed into two chairs.

9TH We arrived in Trivandum, Kerela and got a rickshaw straight to the beach at Kovalam. We picked a hostel with the most amazing view and our room was literally a few metres from the sea with the side facing the sea all full length windows onto a balcony. Heaven :) For the next three days we just walked along the black sand beaches and sat in a little cafe called beatles that played old English music and sold beer. The sea was too dangerous to swim in so we just paddled at the edge. We had some great food here including fish and chips :) and caroline had a lovely citrus chicken.

12TH We got a train to Cochi and trailed round the hostels till we found a cheap one that was clean. Then we went for a walk and ended up getting caught in the rain but as luck had it we found Pizza Hut OMG it was heaven. The next day we went on a backwater tour on a traditional boat through the waterways. It was very relaxing and we got a traditional Keralan lunch on a banana leaf included which was really nice. He also picked things off the trees to show us and we tried fresh black pepper whoo glad we had water with us lol.

14TH Today we shopped. We bought a new ipod charger after leaving ours at Daveys house and in the evening we went to a Kathakali dance performance. It was not what we expected and was very strange but we enjoyed laughing at the wierd faces they made. We met a couple of girls from new york and we all walked the 2km home together in the dark, then us two went and had noodles but the power kept cutting off plunging us into darkness while we were eating.

15TH We made our way to the Athirapilly waterfalls by ourselves today which cost us 200rs in total for both of us and the tour would have been 2000rs. It was a 2 and a half hour journey each way by bus with one change but the falls were really cool and it was a nice bus trip seeing all the gorgeous scenery. When we got back we stumbled upon a bar on our way home and it just happened to be ladies night! We had a couple of free cocktails and bought some beer and thenwent upstairs to the restaurant which was wicked. They had an indian man playing the keyboard and singing english songs and a magician who came to our table and did some amazing David Blaine style tricks which we found even more amazing as we were drunk. Caroline also managed to smash her glass all over the floor and herself lol in one of the poshest restaurants, good night.

16TH We got a sleeper train to Bangalore in the evening and Caroline was on the bottom bunk. It was awful as there was cockroaches running around but we thought we would be safe on our bunks. That was until Caroline discovered a fat cocky (as we call them) on her chest and just as she got him off his friend ran into her ear argh it was awful so we nicked the free upper birth opposite Kirsty and we both managed to get some sleep. The next day we arrived in Bangalore and straight away they were trying to scam us and wouldnt take us were we wanted for the right price so we thought we would be clever and get the bus to the airport and stay at the airport hotel. Once we got to the airport we followed the signs to the hotel and found that it actually wasnt finished being built yet so we had to get back on the bus to a small hostel and stayed there the night. The next day we got on the bus to the airport and after about 2 hours we finally managed to post our two souveniers and our india book back to England. Whether they arrive or even get sent is another matter. Once we had cheched in we sat in the airport sportsbar and Kirsty had nachos ummm they were gorgeous. We got on our flight at 21:15 and got curry sandwiches lol then changed in Sri Lanka to our flight to Beijing via Bangkok.

China

19TH We had finally arrived in Beijing yay. We were greated at the airport by a sign saying 'kristy duncan' and were taken to the hostel called the Red Lantern. We were in a four bed dorm with bunk beds. The place was wicked and felt so homely and safe we loved it. We went out for dinner to a little place where they spoke no english and got a Mongolian hotpot. We had a gas fire thing on our table and she put a big bowl of water with spices on it, then we had to pick lots of stuff off the shelves to put in it. We didnt know what anything was so we just guessed and picked some sausage like things and lots of red meat and salad (we didnt see the noodles lol damn). We had to put everything in the pot including the salad which we thought was strange and then cook it ourselves. It was really good the meat was so soft and the salad tasted like boiled cabbage so we went up for more as we think it was all you can eat but this was all comunicated via hand signals lol.

20TH Today had aimed to get on the metro and explore but we didnt get far because as soon as we left our huatong the street was full of shops :) so we did some shopping and then found a wu mart and bought some food and made nice fresh sandwiches for lunch. In the evening we sat in the courtyard of our hostel and drank 40p big bottles of beer (cheaper here than water) and made friends with our roomate. The next day we went on the metro to the forbidden city and joined all the other tourists that were wandering round. In the evening we tried to go see the opera with our roomate Helen but there were no cheap seats left so we wandered along and found some bars. We ended up getting drunk and staying out till 3am partying with all the chinese it was an awesome night and we all danced and then Caroline and Helen got kebab sticks with some sort of meat on from the street while Kirsty was being pulled on the dancefloor by a chinese girl lol.

22ND Didnt get up till lunch and then us two went to watch Harry Potter at the cinema in English :) then we went to an awesome chinese restaurant with lovely food and Caroline picked something major spicy so our lips were burning and as we had to use chopsticks we both got bright red sauce over our tops which has stained. When we got back to the hostel we met some more people and organised to all get a minibus the next day to the Great Wall.

23RD We got up at 6am and all 8 of us got the metro then a bus then a taxi to get to the great wall stopping on route for some rice for breakie. We did a 10.5km hike along the wall from Jinshanling to Simatai which is where the wall is built over the mountains so there was no flat walking at all. It was really great scenery and we took lots of pics. At the end we crossed the bridge over the river and then got a massive zipwire down which was scary but really fun. We got on a little boat over to the car park and then made our journey back. Once home 6 of us went out for dinner as it was Helens last night. We went to a little chinese place and ordered a few dishes to share and some beer. It was a really cool day.

24TH Said our goodbyes to Helen and decided to make some plans for our time in China, the outcome, we extended our stay in Beijing. To celebrate we decided to go to Pizza Hut and have some 40p pints. The next few days are spent just relaxing and taking in some of Beijings sights including the Olympic grounds, some famous parks and also a variety performace show (very interesting, especially the opera which was ear piercing).

On 30TH we got a taxi to the train station where we had a first class train to Datong. The station was enormous and could only be described as an airport. All luggage had to go through security checks, then we had to go through ticket check, and then we had to go into a waiting room which had a private stairway to our train. Once on the train our tickets were exchanged for tokens, this was so the staff know when to wake you up ensuring you don't miss your stop... so organised compared to india! 6 hours later we arrive in Datong and get taken to our hotel.....OMG! It was soo big and posh. We booked it over the ineternet so managed to get a really good deal, 28 pounds a night including breakfast.

31ST we got up early for our free breakfast, it was a huge buffet. They had toast, eggs, sausages, bacon, hash browns, pancakes, cakes and ornage squash - kirsty was very happy!! After eating so much our tummys hurt we slowly make our way to the bus stop to go to the Yungang Caves. Doing it independantly we saved ourselves 95 Yuan, its crazy what the tours charge! The caves were good but very similar to the Ellora and Ajanta caves we saw in Inida, hundreds and hundreds of carved buddhas. Caroline decided to try a pea flavoured ice lolly - soo wrong!!

The next day we go to the CITS tourist office after finding out there isn't a bus to the Hanging Temple, we agree to do the tour for 7 pounds each which wasn't bad considering it was a three hour journey there and then again back. Unfortunately the hanging temple was a bit of a disappointment, the place was crammed with tourists and the actual temple was quite small. There was a singlefile oneway walkway through the temple up and down very steep stairs which ment most of the time there was stood waiting in a que. Despite this the fact the temple was perched on the side of a cliff only being held up by a few wooden poles was cool.

3RD AUGUST we pack our bags and leave for the train station, today we had a first class sleeper train to Xi'an. For the 17 hour journey it was only twenty two pounds for the ticket - bargain!

On WEDS 5TH we got up early and made our own way the the Terracotta Army. The bus journey took an hour and only cost 7 Yuan (70p). There were 4 different pits, the first was a museum displaying pictures of how the army had been found and small weapon like objects, the second was an ongoing excavation where you got to see them uncovering the army, and the third and final pit was the actual rows of soldiers as they were found. This was really cool!

6TH AUGUST Booked our tain tickets to Chengdu for saturday 8th and rented a tandem bike to cycle the city wall. Kirsty on the back and caroline on the front - disaster! Good fun though!

MON 10TH we woke up early to go on a Panda tour, we got there for 7.40am so that we could watch them eating and playing around - they were soo cute! We also got to see a young baby panda that was in an incubator. He was only 10cm in size and hadnt grown any black fur or opened his eyes yet. After the tour we decided to go for a sichuan hotpot, kirsty insisted that we had the spicey flavour even after we were warned by the waitresses. It arrived and we could barely eat it, all the locals were watching and laughing at us.

11TH = Burning ring of fire!!!

Later on we checked out of our hostel and go to the bus station. It was soo organised with ticket checks and bag checks. After all this we were seated on a luxury AC bus (soo different from India)...Oh lets not forget...kirsty held the bus up for 10 mins while she took a strole to the toilet. On arrival in Emei we get a taxi to our hostel "Teddy Bear", staff were soo miserable!

12TH AUGUST We were up and trekking the holy mountain "Emei Shan" at 8.20am. The mountain was gorgeous full of clear waterfalls and green trees. We trekked for 10 hours covering a total of 50km as it started to get dark we thought it was time to check into one of the monastries run by monks. It just so happened we picked the most expensive one 400Yuan (40 pounds) per night. We were so tired and hot we just agreed. On the way up the mountain there was loads of monkey, evil monkey, we had to carry bamboo sticks to hit them to protect ourselves. It was quite scary at times!

The next day we get back on the path at 7.30am to reach the summit. It was worth the grueling hike up thousands of endeless steps as the views were incredible! After a few hours at the peak we agree a bus ride would be the best way to disend the mountain.

Emei Shan 3000m and 50km completed in 12 hours

SAT 15TH Get up early to get a bus to Chongqing wanted some breakfast but the staff were really miserable and wouldnt let us have anything - boo. On arrival in Chongqing we dropped our bags at the hostel and made our way into town to do some retail therapy. New t shirt for kirsty (although still not managed to replace the "white" which is now yellow swim top).

16TH AUGUST We wake up really early excited about our cruise. Checked out of hostel and walked round the port trying to find our cruise ship, this proved very stressful and challenging. Finally we found our way and got on the boat. This also proved challenging as they said our ticket wasnt valid. After much waiting around they show us to our room, very nice!

17TH AUGUST Woken up by peaceful chinese music at 7am head down for breakfast which was a huge buffet with freshly cooked fried eggs (kirsty very happy). Later on we went to several demonstrations including silk embrodery and snuff bottle painting. After lunch we were taken to Ghost City which was very intersting if not a bit odd. Back on the boat for the welcome dinner and dance. Other passengers on the cruise proved to be BORING!

18TH AUGUST Again woken up by chinese music at 7am (really wanting a lay in by now). Today we were taken to the three small gorge dam. This was really cool as we were transfered onto a small boat which was being pulled by men singing. In the evening we had a farewell dinner and dance....everyone STILL boring!

19TH AUGUST More chinese music at 7am! After breakfast we went to see the dam project - it was far too hot for all the numbers and information that was being thrown at us. Check out of cruise at 1pm and were met by a man with our train tickets. Didnt think he would actually turn up so very pleased with this! From there we got a cab to Yichang train station where we had a sleeper ticket to Guangzhou

20TH AUGUST Our sleeper train arrived at guangzhou at 12pm from there we walked to the Marriott Hotel to catch a bus to Hong Kong Island. This proved much easier than expected! After two hours on the bus we got to the border where we had several checks then back onto the bus for another hour. Arrived in Hong Kong 5pm.

Hong Kong

We arrived in Hong Kong by bus at 5pm, the place was a huge city full of sky scrapers, elevated walkways and hundreds and thousands of bodies. We found our hostel on Hong Kong Island relatively easy - great location right where everything was happening. We were even "up graded" free of charge from a 6 bed dorm to a 3 bed dorm. After checking in we went for a walk and found an Outback Steak House. The bill horrified us 300HKD - after that we started buying food from the supermarket and making it ourselves.

SAT 22ND we decided to find a beach with our room mate Gwen. It was soo hot but luckily the sea was cool so we kept jumping in to cool ourselves off. There was a huge net sectioning of the swimming area - a shark net maybe?? We go home to realise that caroline burnt her bottom...badly!

SUN 23RD we walked around the shops but because it was everyones day off it proved very stressful as you just couldnt move. Late afternoon we got a tram up the highest peak - this was really cool as we were forced back in our chairs because it was soo steep. Once at the top we found a shrimp restaurant/ bar where we sat and drank beer. We timed it just right so we got to watch the light and musci show. The two islands (Hong Kong and Kowloon) light up all the sky scraper to music every evening. Its really amazing to watch!

MON 24TH was Ocean Park! We got up early and took a taxi to the theme park. The place was wicked - rollercoasters, rides, dolphin shows and hot airballoon rides. It had everything. It was soo hot so we ended up buying electric fans (the best pound ever spent). After a long day we went back to the hostel and had a cold shower ... oh and a pot mash potatoe.

WEDS 26TH we checked out of our hostel and took a sleeper bus from Hong Kong Island back into Nanning, China. The bus was amazing and very posh. Caroline had the top bunk and Kirsty had the bottom bunk. Once in Nanning we got another bus directly into Hanoi crossing the boarder at Pingxing. The second bus took eight hours making us arrive in Vietnam at 4pm.

Vietnam

Our bus dropped us in the middle of no where conveniently next to some dodgy looking taxis (as they always do) . From there we shared a taxi with another girl straight to our Hotel in Hanoi. Shortly after we checked in Kirstys dad arrived from his city tour. We went to a little restaurant to catch up. Decided to book the 3 day 2 night tour to Ha Long Bay for the following morning. Thanks Brian!

FRI 28TH Up early ready for our tour. We were collected from our hotel by bus then transfered to a boat and then onto our Junk boat where we stayed the night. On the first day we visited a cave and went kayaking round some of the 1996 islands. In the evening we anchored up and jumped off the boat into the sea - it was soo much fun. Although getting back onto the boat proved quite difficult! Kirsty demonstrated her monkey skills as she climbed up the anchor rope.

SAT 29TH We cruised to Cat Ba Island where we were transfered into a 3* hotel. In the afternoon we walked to a local beach resort and swam with the fish. The beach was gorgeous we didnt want to leave! In the evening we went our for a few drinks but ended up in a hostess bar - oppss!

SUN 30TH Transfered back onto our Junk boat and then taken back to our hotel. Overall great tour!

MON 31ST Check out of hotel and got a sleeper train to SA PA (3 day 4 night tour). Arrived in Sa Pa early and checked into our hotel. For the first day of our tour we visited Cat Cat village and waterfall where the Hmong people live. We were shown around by five Hmong girls aged 16 all of which were half the size of us. In the afternoon we wandered around the market and found a nice little bar for a few beers.

WED 2ND We went trekking into the valley along the stepped rice paddys stopping off in minority villages along the way. In the afternoon we took a dip in the river - VERY COLD and strong rapids. Afterwards, we decided to make some hats using bamboo and leaves. Our accommodation was the loft area of one of the houses of the minority people. The family were so nice and the mum cooked us traditional vietnamese food and encouraged us to down shots of rice wine (very drunk). Awesome night.

THUR 3RD The next day we woke up with a banging headache but the views over the paddy fields and banana pancakes soon sorted us out. We trekked to another waterfall and then back to the hotel through beautiful scenery. Later we got a sleeper train back to Hanoi where we booked our onward journey via a hop on hop off bus. First stop was Hue, a 12 hour sleeper bus from Hanoi.

MON 7TH Hue greeted us with heaps of rain and thunder. We chill out in our hostel taking advantage of the free beer. The next day we went on a DMZ tour to learn about the war, visiting some of the underground tunnels the vietnamese lived in for 6 years. AMAZING!

WED 9TH Next stop was Hoi' an... more rain!! As typical tourists we rented some push bikes and went to the beach despite the rain. The next day we went to visit some temples called My Son then got a sleeper bus straight to Nha Trang.

FRI 11TH Arrive in Nha Trang and checked into a very nice hotel (swimming pool, sauna, gym, a la carte breakfast, free internet) met some nice girls on the bus and met up with them for dinner and a few drinks.

The next day we started our PADI Open Water Dive Course which consisted of DVDs, tests and practical in a swimming pool. Our first impression of diving was that it wasn't that great but we decided to continue with it.

SUN 13TH we had our first open water dives - so scary! After our first fun dive we discovered what it was all about!! It was incredible, a completely different world full of fish, turtles and coral. So beautiful which made us both feel so much more positive. In the afternoon it was back to the classroom for some more tests.

MON 14TH we had our final two dives. These were much more difficult as we had to use all the skills we had learnt in the swimming pool and apply them in the sea. After completing these we did some fun dives and took a camera underwater so we could get lots of photos. After the dives we went back to the classroom for our final exam - WE PASSED!! Kirsty with 98% :)

We have been given two free fun dives each which we have decided to do on Weds. They were cool and we saw more turtles and a moray hiding under some rocks with really sharp teeth - didnt want to leave Nha Trang!

FRI 18TH Arrived in Da Lat after a 7 hour bus journey & rented mopeds for the afternoon. An experience lol! Kirsty drove us to a quiet area (a bit wobbly) where we both practiced driving the moped. Then we went and sped round the large lake about 5 times with Caroline driving at 40mph and Kirsty on the back shouting to slow down! As we found it difficult to turn at the junctions with all the traffic we kept taking the first turn off at all the roundabouts so took an interesting route back to the hotel stopping off for a drink to rest at one point. As we sat there resting we saw a motorbike crash. Didnt really want to get back on after that but we somehow managed to get back in one piece. Not much we want to do here so only stayed one night.

SAT 19TH Arrived in Mui Ne and spent the day (and night) in the pool drinking beer and cocktails, and singing along with the vietnamese karaoke. Rained in the late evening so all the vietnamese sat under the shelter having a bbq, we stayed in the pool of course lol tourists!

SUN 20TH We got up early for a big buffet breakfast (great pancakes) and decided to walk into the town centre to book our onward travel. Ended up being an 8km walk lol very sweaty. On arrival in the tourist office we decided to book to go on a sand dune tour. The open top jeep collected us at 2pm where we were taken to a "Fairy Stream" where we had to take our shoes off and walk up a muddy stream. After that we went to see both red and yellow sand dunes. They were great and we slid down them on peices of plastic. To top it off we were caught in a massive storm with lightning zig zagging across the sky which made it truly amazing. Back to the hotel for pizza.

MON 21ST We checked out of our hotel and relaxed by the pool all day. Our bus came to collect us at 5pm arriving in HCMC at 10pm. From the bus stop we got a dodgy looking taxi to Karens appartment where we relaxed for the evening.

TUES 22ND We did nothing apart from chill out in Karens lovely appartment. We did our washing in a real machine and dryer, went to the local coop and brought coco shreddies for breakfast and pesto pasta for lunch. In the evening we went out for dinner with Karen giving us a chance to catch up. Also booked a tour for the following day.

WEDS 23RD Up early as we had a tour booked to see the Cu Chi Tunnels. It was a two hour journey each way which was broken up by visiting a Handicapped Craft place (later discovered that the people were handicaped due to the Agent Orange spread during the war). We crawled through the tunnels for 100m, they were so small despite them being made bigger for tourists! By the end of the 100m we were literally dripping with sweat - it was soo hot! Hard to imagine people lived down there for soo long!

THURS 24TH We have a lovely lay in and later took a strole round the town and ended up buying more jewellery from the market. In the evening we enjoyed one of the best meals since travelling - English Sausages, Mashed Potatoes & Bisto Gravy. Thanks Karen it was just what we needed!

FRI 25TH We had a boat tour to the Mekong Delta. Long day but brilliant! We watched them making coconut candy, drank lots of snake wine, rice wine & honey wine, ate lots of fresh fruit, watched a traditional music performance and ended by going on a little rowing boat.

SAT 26TH SEP we rushed around trying to pack our bags ready for our 11.15am bus into Cambodia. Just as we got our bags fastened Karen arrived back with fresh pastries - good one they were gorgeous! We made it to our bus even though we didnt want to leave. Karen also made us a packed lunch, chedder cheese sandwiches :)

Arrived in Cambodia, Phnom Penh at 5.30pm on 26th.

Cambodia

First impressions......it doesnt smell like India! Thank god!

SUN 27TH SEP We checked out the local area, found a nice little place for breakfast that served Crossaints. In the afternoon we walked to the S21 Prison...we were soo not ready for it! It was the most brutal place ever! It was a museum but nothing was covered or closed off. The cells had been left exactly how they had been, beds in exactly the same position as when the person died on it, blood stains all over the floors and ceiling from the immense torture. There were even photos of the people when they were alive and after they had been murdered lying dead on the floor. It was horrific! We left feeling extremely sad with nothing to say ...

MON 28TH - The Killing Fields were sad aswell as you could see the mass graves were hundreds of people had been chucked and there were still clothes sticking out from under the ground. They had hundreds of bones there too, mainly skulls. We saw skulls of 14 year old girls with holes in them and machete marks on them from where they had been beaten to death, its just sickening. The next day was meant to be relaxing before we left but we ended up finding a massive spider the size of our hand in our room! It guarded the door so we were trapped in the room lol wasnt funny at the time. Once we managed to escape we got one of the lads that worked in the hostel to come and catch it for us and even he was a bit scared coz it was a poisenous one.

WED 30TH SEP - This morning we got a 6 hour bus to Siem Reap. When we arrived there we found the place flooded after what someone told us had been the worst storm in 40 years. We had to wade through knee deep water just to get to the next pub across the road - of course nothing stops us lol.

THUR 1ST OCT - For the next two days we visited the famous temples of Angkor Wat. It was a bit of an adventure because of the floods and we had to walk through thigh high fast flowing water to get to one of the temples. The temples were good but unfortunately we didnt see Lara Croft anywhere. We went to the pubs in the evenings and one night after a few beverages we decided to try out the fish massage thing. We had to put our feet in a tank full of fish who then nibbled all the dead skin of everyones feet and legs, urgh lol it felt really tickly and we kept giggling. Lets say Kirsty wouldnt have done it if she hadnt of had the beer first. To make things even funnier on the way home at the end of the night, our tuk tuk got stuck in a massive hole in the flooded road. We had to get out of the tuk tuk in the dark into the thigh high water and push the tuk tuk out of the hole and along the road lol and we still had to pay the full price of $1.

Thailand

SAT 3RD OCT - We took a 12 hour bus from Siem Reap, Cambodia to Pattaya! We arrived at 7pm and couldnt believe the amount of bars that were there. As soon as we found somewhere to stay we went out :) there was great music everywhere and we even found a real shopping mall! Caroline was in heaven especially when we found a topshop in there, she actually ran into the shop. The next day was also taken up with shopping and a swim in the pool.

MON 5TH - In one of the other malls we found a Ripleys believe it or not so we decided to spend the day in there. It included a wierd museum, a crazy mirror maze, a 4d simulation theatre and a scary haunted house where real people are dressed up like crazy murderers and run after you with chainsaws! There was only four of us in our group, us and two thai kids so Caroline went at the front at first as the rest of us were scared, but most of time we were all just huddled together or running screaming pushing each other out of the way.

TUES 6TH - Two hour bus to Bangkok and found a mcd's at the end of our road opposite the bar that wouldnt serve us lol think they thought we were competition for their thai working girls. We got cheesy chips from macdonalds and strawberry fanta! Caroline was sick after this so we decided to go back to asian food from now on. For the next few days we just relaxed by the pool and kept shopping :) well mostly window shopping really. We went to the cinema one day and before they played the film we all had to stand up to pay respecxts to the thai king, we had to stop ourselves from giggling coz you would never do that in England. In the evenings we met up with our friend Matt. He took us to some bars and we had food and some beers, and then some more beers.

SUN 11TH OCT - Sleeper train to chaing mai was good. We were served beer and the staff put sheets on our beds omg how civilized. Prob the comfiest sleeper train we have been on. The only downside was that they kept the lights on the whole night. The next morning we arrived at about 8am and spent the day looking at all the different tours and activities available, trying to find the cheapest ones.

TUES 13TH - We went to the night safari today and it was wicked. We saw all the animals you could imagine but the highlight was when we held a white bengal tiger cub on our lap (one of less than 300 white bengal tigers in the whole world) and Caroline fed it a bottle of milk. It was so cute but scary at the same time.

WED 14TH - Sat on the top of our jeep holdin on so tight we went off roading up the mountain to get to our starting place in the river for white water rafting. There was just us and two instructors in our raft. It was so much fun but really made your adrenaline pump especially when we got stuck on a massive rock in the river and then when we where getting sucked back into the wave by the current and the raft nearly capsized and another raft was coming towards us so Kirsty had to jump over to the other side of the raft so she didnt get hit. We would do it again definetely it was amazing fun.

THUR 15TH - Today we start our three day mahout training course with the elephants. We met our elephants and Caroline's was called Seenone and Kirsty's was called Nongnew. We practised getting on and off them and it was really hard. Then we rode them bareback through the jungle and stopped at a mahouts house for lunch where we met his elephant who had a 5 day old baby boy elephant aww he was soooo cute and we kept holding his trunk. Everyday we had to bathe the elephants in the river which was quite scary as we both got trapped once by the elephant lying against a rock while ours legs happened to be between the elephant and the rock. Only a bit bruised though but definetely scary. After that we tried to stay on the elephants while they were in the water but they roll around and spray us with water so we had no chance lol. We also had to take them for a black mud bath which was very messy and cut down grass to feed to them. Our mahouts let us sit on them when they did tricks like standing up on their back legs, bowing and dancing. When Nongnew walked behind Seenone he would hold onto Seenone's tail with his trunk. Both nights we stayed in a thai hut with our guide's family and his wife made us traditional thai food. It was such a great experience!

SUN 18TH We relaxed for the next couple of days before undertaking a Thai Cooking Lesson on the 20th. The lesson was awesome, we learnt about all the different herbs and vegetables and they took us to the local market. We learnt how to cook seven different dishes including spring rolls and red thai curry.

WEDS 21ST Today we were forced to purchase an extra bag as we had accumulated a few new items. The next day we went to the cinema for the third time since travelling - The Ugly Truth - hilarious!

THURS 23RD After a late morning we drank in our favourite irish bar, ate roast dinner and played free pool. In the evening we rocked it out at a nightclub called Bubbles. Needless to say the next day was a complete right off, with two take aways and a complete series of CSI. The next two days we chilled by the pool.

27TH OCT We Boarded our sleeper train at 14:50 and ate our subway on the journey accompanied with a beer. We arrived at 05:30 the following morning and luckily we could check in to our hotel early so had a little nap before shopping for scuba gear and then getting ready to meet Kirsty’s Dad Brian and sister April. Due to their flight being delayed we were forced to drink copious amounts of beer while we waited outside our hotel for them. Luckily for us the man sat at the next table paid for all our beers J we even drank the hotel out of two types of beer and got a free T-shirt. Once Dad (Brian) and April arrived we all had a few more drinks and went out for food and around the little shopping stalls.

29TH OCT Today Brian showed us round the local temples and Buddha statues. We hired a boat and went on a trip round the river looking at all the scenery and Royal Chariot Boats. On the way back to the hotel we squeezed the 4 of us in one tuk tuk and went out that night to a few bars.

30TH OCT The four of us went on a two day one night river kwai tour. The first day we visited the floating market and went on a boat trip to see the locals houses built on the river. Then we rode on the death railway and were taken to our floating accommodation where Caroline and April crossed a very scary rickety bridge with holes in. For the rest of the evening we sat on a floating raft drinking, playing cards and dangling our feet in the water, it was very relaxing. The following morning we went swimming with the elephants in the river and rode them bareback in the water while holding onto their ears. They were cheeky and sprayed us with water and shook their heads to try and throw us into the water. Next we went to the tiger temple to touch the tigers and April and Kirsty got sprayed when the tiger was trying to mark its territory. Later on we visited a gorgeous waterfall and went to the hellfire pass museum. We got to Pattaya later that evening by minibus and all went out to find a big Halloween concert in full swing.

1ST NOV On Kirsty’s birthday we all went to a crocodile farm and fed the crocs with chickens dangling off pieces of string and watched them jumping up for the food. We watched a crocodile show where a crazy man put his head in the crocodiles mouth. Afterwards we had our photos taken sitting on top of the crocodile in an enclosure with lots of other crocodiles around too. April got to bottle feed a little baby tiger cub and an elephant picked her up with his trunk. The next stop was a snake park where we watched another crazy show; this time the man was throwing round poisonous snakes. Due to our front row seats April had a close encounter with one of the snakes sharp teeth after its head landed an inch away from her foot. After the show we got to touch and hold some of the snakes. On the way back to the hotel we were taken to a huge gem shop which was pretty amazing. Later that evening Brian had organised a birthday party for Kirsty; pink balloons, ice cream cake and her favourite Chicken curry. To top it off us three girls didn’t pay for a drink all night J

3RD NOV Up early for a day of swinging around in the trees. We were taken into the jungle and then had to zip wire and rapell for four hours. It proved tricky as the wind was very strong and the trees were swaying. Caroline ended up stuck in the middle of a zip wire and had to be rescued by a member of the staff. Afterwards we went to the open zoo and fed the Giraffes some long beans. Their tongues are soo slimy and cow like lol Then April got attacked by a monkey…lets just say the monkey didn’t want the stick. In the evening we went to the temple and brought little flower rafts to celebrate Loh Katong. We tried to float them out to the sea, very unsuccessfully.

3RD NOV We all got a speedboat out to an island and spent the day in the sea and playing silly games in the sand. The sea was very choppy on the way back and it was a bumpy journey. In the evening we sat in a bar and watched Thai boxing then played some pool. The next day we had a quick dip in the pool and said goodbye to dad (Brian) before getting a minibus to the airport and onto our flight to Phuket. We met up Caroline’s mum Cheryll and sister Kerry who came out for a holiday and spent the night catching up.

5TH NOV After much persuasion Cheryll agrees to go white water rafting. We went on a tour that first took us to feed lots of wild monkeys. Kirsty, Caroline and April were a bit wary after the zoo experience but Kerry and Cheryll bought some nuts so we fed them the nuts from our hands and they jumped up on us a few times.

6TH NOV Today was a rest day….so why the hell did we all end up doing a bungy jump?? We blame April lol! It started off as a peaceful day on the beach until we ended up jet skiing across the bay and then later throwing ourselves from a 160ft crane. What else is there to say….oh April got black eyes

7TH NOV We got a speed boat over to the Similan Islands to enjoy a few days of bliss. The sea was soo turquoise and yet so clear. We stopped at several bays to snorkel and saw some amazing fish and coral. Our highlight was when two giant turtles swam right over to us. They were inches from out faces so we reached out and they let us touch their shell and legs. They were soo cute! Our accommodation consisted of two tents but due to some unfortunate events we ended up sharing one. Lets just say noneone got any sleep. But we still had the energy to jump off the third deck of the boat and swim away from the jellyfish (kerry you are hilarious)

10TH NOV Our first day apart in 6 months. Caroline, Kerry and Cheryll all decided to go on a family tour to Phang Nha. We visited many different islands including James Bond Island, kayaked through caves and jumped from the boat. All the while Cheryll was taking photos of rocks lol The crew put on a cabaret show on the way back to shore, very entertaining! Overall great day.

Kirsty and April decided to take a break from islands and spent the day playing darts, pool and drinking then swimming in the pool and drinking by the pool bar. Playing swimming through the legs drunk is a little dangerous…..sorry April J

11TH NOV Unfortunately Aprils holiday had come to an end so we went to the airport to see her off. However this proved more difficult as she left one of her bags in Caroline’s hand and neither of them noticed. We had to have an announcement put over the tannoy, "can a April Duncan please report to the information desk" and she had to come back through security to get it. At least we got to say goodbye again lol Later that afternoon we endured a two-hour ferry crossing to Koh Phi Phi. It was terrible. On arrival we checked into our accommodation and watched the crazy fire show on the beach. Skipping ropes on fire and drunken people really don’t go together!

The next day we relaxed in the pool, and the day after us two and Kerry decided to go diving. It was awesome we saw loads of Turtles an even swam a metre away from a Leopard Shark.

14TH NOV - Today was our last morning in Phi Phi. After a hearty breakfast we got on a long tail boat back to Phuket. It was a very enjoyable 2 hour journey. We accompanied kerry and mum (cheryll) on their last tuk tuk ride to the airport. After saying our good byes we returned to Patong and traipsed around until we found some cheap accommodation.

Malaysia

Sat 28th Nov - Stranded at Kota Kinabalu airport for over two hours as the project co-ordinator was waiting at the wrong airport. Once she picked us up we then had to wait for another girl to arrive before being transferred to the Tang Dynasty Hotel, time to rest. Later in the evening we meet some of our group and go to dinner at the sea front restaurant.

Sun 29th Nov – Today we relaxed, did a bit of shopping and met the rest of our group. During the day some of us got a boat to a nearby island and did some snorkelling. In the evening we ate at the sea front restaurant, drank a few cocktails and tried smoking a sheesha.

Mon 30th Nov – Today we were transferred to Rasa Ria, a 5 star resort. It was amazing and we had a sea view room. We spent the whole day in the pool playing on the slides and mucking around. For dinner we had an all you can eat buffet from 6 different restaurants, it was great!

Tues 1st Dec – In the morning we trekked up to a vantage point for some pics and then went to get our first glimpse of what we had come here for . . . . . . the orang-utans. They were sooo cute. Later on we had our induction with Albert and the following morning checked out of the hotel to fly to Sandakan. Once transferred to the rest house we could unpack. The rest house was very nice with AC in our rooms and a TV downstairs, and situated right outside the gates of the Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary. The staff cook us three meals a day and clean our rooms once a week. We are very well looked after.

Thurs 3rd Dec – Today we were taken on a tour of Sandakan, our local town. We visited a gypsy sea village and went to a WW2 site where many people were killed. The next day we met the staff at Sepilok and had a formal induction from Sylvia and the vet about the work at the sanctuary and how we would be involved.

Sat 5th Dec – This morning we were taught what to do in our first rotation, husbandry. Husbandry involves taking food to the orang-utans that have been released in the jungle. In the afternoon we were shown the routine in the clinic where all the babies, the juveniles that are aged from 2-7 and the poorly ones are looked after. The next morning we were in the clinic again feeding the babies and poorly Orang Utans. After that we carried the older ones into the play cage and gave their night cages a good scrub and cleaned the place up.

Mon 7th Dec – Begin husbandry! Our daily routine is to arrive at the clinic at 8:15 and weigh out some bananas, sugar cane, sweet potato and bread. We carry the food, warm milk and sometimes a few orang utans that have returned to the clinic during the night, back into the jungle to platform 4. The trek isn’t too far but we work up a good sweat, especially if we are dragging rosalinda (a 7yr old female who likes people). Once at the platform we feed all of the semi wild orangs while trying not to get grabbed or bitten by the cheeky orangs. Afterwards we trek back through the forest to the tourist platform. There we answer the tourist’s questions and guard the platform in case any orangs or macaques come near the tourists. We finish the morning at about 12 mid day. Then in the afternoon we return to the tourist platform at 1.45pm for the afternoon feeding. On only our first day Rosalinda climbed onto the platform near the tourists. Caroline told all the tourists to move away and we had to stop them touching her while Laura the other girl in our team carried her back into the jungle. We finish at 4 pm. The next day was the same routine taking the food into the jungle and going to the tourist platform. After lunch Kirsty carried Atama (one of her favourites now), a 5 year old male to platform A and released him back into the jungle after being through the 5 year rehabilitation process.

Weds 9th Dec – Start the day with our usual trek into the jungle, this time just carrying bananas and no orang-utans. We arrived at platform 4 to feed all the semi wild orang-utans. Once this is complete we walk back through the jungle to the tourist platform. There we found Atama and Sogo sogo a 5yr old female playing in the small tree on the tourist platform. We had to secure the area and keep everyone back to ensure the orang-utans didn’t come into contact with the tourists. After lunch we went back to the tourist platform where we found Mishcan (next in line to be the dominant male!) walking along the handrail towards the tourists. We had to move the tourists away as quickly as possible but it was scary as he kept growling and baring his teeth. To top the day off CID the massive dominant male with big flanges made an appearance at the feeding platform. We were so lucky because he doesn’t come often especially as all the females are already pregnant.

Thurs 10th Dec – Due to CID being in the area lots of the orang-utans were scared and ran to the clinic so when we arrived in the morning we had to carry/walk/drag 3 orang-utans back into the jungle. After that we continued further into the jungle carrying milk and bananas to feed the semi wild orang-utans. Afterwards we trekked to the tourist platform where all the tourists were complaining because there was not many orang-utans there. We had to tell them that they are wild animals and we cannot force them to come and eat here. Unfortunately there was no more sightings of CID but we did have 7 staff including us, guarding the tourist platform just in case.

Fri 11th Dec – On arrival at the clinic we discover that Oscar is sitting on the roof waiting for an opportunity to break into the food room. As a morning gift he decided to urinate off of the roof onto Kirsty, Caroline and Laura, deliberately aiming and smiling at us. After we weighed the bananas, and the milk was heated we took Tiger (the orang-utan who has previously led other sick orang-utans back to the clinic for treatment) and started our trek into the jungle. Not even 5 minutes into the trek and Tiger does a runner back to the clinic, so we went without him to platform 4 where we discovered Toby breaking into the food box. After feeding the orang-utans we trekked to the tourist platform to watch the orang-utans playing. In the afternoon the two naughty best friends Sogo sogo and Atama were on the tourist platform AGAIN.

Sat 12th Dec – Today no orang-utans needed carrying back to platform 4 which made our trek into the jungle quicker. Kirsty found a big tiger leech on her leg, - urgh. After feeding the orang-utans we went to the feeding platform and got drenched in the rain. In the afternoon the sun came out and so did the hungry orang-utans, good afternoon.

Sun 13th Dec - Today the visitor at the clinic was Mishcan who was desperate to see his girlfriend Eyos who is in the treatment room. He is too big to take back into the jungle so Ellis the ranger had to scare him away by pretending to use a dart gun. When trying to feed the orang-utans at platform 4 Brock tried to grab and play with us and Caroline almost lost her trousers, scary. In the afternoon both Mishcan and Ringo (a wild male orang-utan) came onto the tourist platform so we had to move the tourists away.

Mon 14th Dec – On arrival at platform 4 we see that Toby is very sick so we quickly feed the other orang-utans and take Toby back to the clinic. He was so well behaved and walked with us most of the way but once he saw one of the rangers he ran and hid up a tree. We couldn’t get him down so we left him and went to the tourist platform thinking he would turn up there for some food. To our surprise he didn’t and instead he walked from the jungle through the tourist walkway and walked hand in hand with Caroline the rest of the way to the treatment room.

Tues 15th Dec – Today was our last day on husbandry rotation and we were allowed to move the two orang-utans from the play cage to a holding cage in the jungle in preparation for their release into the jungle. On arrival at platform 4 Rosalinda sat on the food bin with a piece of plastic and bathed herself in the rainwater, it was so cute. After they were fed we went to the tourist platform, very uneventful afternoon.

Wed 16th Dec – Today we started our jungle trekking rotation which starts at 8:30. Once in the jungle we have to locate orang-utan nests and record the data. The nests are really hard to see but we did see a flying lizard and a green viper (its poison kills in 30 minutes). In the afternoon we have free time so we decided to go to the tourist platform to get some pics of the orang-utans playing. Day 2 of jungle trekking and lots of leeches. The fun of trekking is wearing off as everytime it tips it down with rain and we get soaked. At lunch one of our friends’ returns from the jungle with a painful bite so we decided to take her to the clinic where we identify it to be a scorpion bite. In the evening we went to a Christmas party with the Sepilok staff. Some of the men dressed as women – very funny.

Fri 18th Dec – We wake up tired after the party but soldier on into the jungle. Many of the routes in the jungle were badly flooded so we had to go cross-country which was really fun. After lunch and a little siesta we head to the clinic to help out with the juveniles. Caroline took Ceria (4yr male) to the jungle gym so he can practise his climbing and Kirsty taught Tara (2yr female) to climb in the play area. Saturday morning was the usual jungle trekking and in the afternoon we went to the tourist platform but there was too many people so we went to the shop and bought some souvenirs.

Sun 20th Dec – Today was our last trek with James and we did a very adventurous route due to the heavy rain, resulting in us balancing on logs over the water barefoot. Once we got back to the house Kirsty took her top off to find a leach on her chest, after some screaming Caroline killed it with the dettol. It all calmed down until Caroline took her top off and Kirsty started screaming and pointing at Caroline’s chest – another leech. In the afternoon we helped out in the clinic and clean out the babies enrichment cage, we also got to take some babies and juveniles out. Caroline was trying to teach the feisty baby Michelle, a 2yr old female, to climb but she was having none of it and just wanted to pick on the other smaller babies. Caroline then tried to help get Alan a large hairy and troublesome juvenile into his cage and ended up getting bitten twice and now has a good couple of bruises.

Mon 21st Dec – Today Ellis and Salim take us into the jungle to conduct a mammal survey. We have to mark 30 points on a jungle trail with tape, each being 25metres apart. After lunch we return to the trail and lay a trap by each marker. Each day we will check the traps twice to find out what mammals are living in the jungle.

Tues 22nd Dec – After Caroline’s usual 4 slices of toast we head into the jungle to check our traps. We caught a tree shrew in two different traps and we helped weigh, measure and mark them before setting them free again. Unfortunately Caroline laid her traps wrong and locked the doors open lol. In the afternoon Caroline and Brett went to book us bus tickets to Semporna and collect Caroline’s parcel from the post office. Kirsty and Laura went to checked the traps but there wasn’t anything. Once we were back together we opened the xmas box from Caroline’s mum and blew up our inflatable tree and put our cards up on the table, its nearly Christmas! In the evening we went on a nocturnal walk to see the orangs nesting and watch the flying squirrels. We liked the fireflies.

Wed 23rs Dec – This morning we went to check the traps but got chased through the jungle by a group of macaques. We couldn’t stop so we just had to ignore the traps and walk quickly to get away from the macaques - scary. After lunch we went and reset the traps after the macaques had stolen the bananas from them all. In the evening we headed out for our second nocturnal walk. We had just stepped onto the tourist walkway when we saw CID, the dominant male, on the fence just 3metres away from us. Kirsty ran away lol and Caroline stood there watching him. He was annoyed that we were there and kept growling and shaking the trees. He was scary but slowly he moved away and we watched him make his nest high up in the trees.

Thur 24th Dec – Today was our last day of work before we have 8 days off. We trek into the jungle to check the traps and find we have caught 2 common tree shrews and 1 tortoise. He was so cute and filled the cage, we thought he was stuck in it but we managed to wiggle him out. When we got back to the rest house Kirsty’s package had arrived. We put our stockings on the table ready for tomorrow and in the evening we went to the Sabah hotel just us two. It was a Christmas buffet and we had roast turkey and stuffing, roast potatoes, veg and gravy. It was heaven. We had party poppers, crackers, Christmas hats and the staff sang carols. After we had eaten we went to the bar for a drink and listened to the awesome live band.

Fri 25th Dec – We awoke to the noise downstairs of everyone up and ready to do secret santa. We had some bucksfizz, made by Sheila, which was a nice surprise. After some amusing gifts eg peanut erasers and pickled lettuce, us two went upstairs to open our presents from the family. They were all brill thanks both mums and family and friends. At midday we all went to the English teahouse (owned by a man named Rory) for Christmas dinner. It was 5 courses and very nice but the buffet yesterday still beat it. Then we moved onto the house of the lady, Sylvia, who is our boss at Sepilok and there was beer and rice wine, oh and some good pics of Caroline drinking it. Later on we organised a cold food buffet and drinks to celebrate while playing silly games. Of course Boxing Day involved relaxing, eating our goodies from Christmas and playing with our pressies.

Sun 27th Dec – We got to the bus stop at about 7:30 and waited about 60 mins for the bus to arrive – it was on malay time! The journey to Semporna took about 5 hours and for the whole journey all we could see out of the window was palm oil trees as far as the eye could see. It really hit us then how extensively the forest here has been cut down. When we arrived everyone was booked for dorm beds but us two decided to get a private room as it wasn’t much more. All the diving permits for Sipidan were full as most people book months in advance due to it being one of the best dive sites in the world. Instead we were put on the waiting list and booked to dive at Mabul for the following day. That night Caroline had pizza for dinner and Kirsty had spaghetti bolognaise plus a few beers.

Mon 28th Dec – Today we did three fun dives at Mabul. Our first dive was a wall dive and Caroline had a Remora fish that kept sucking on her leg. It was horrible because we didn’t know what it was and whether it was poisonous. Later we found out that they are harmless and that they usually attach onto turtles. The next dive was underneath an old oilrig and there were some huge fish, so cool! Our last dive of the day was just off the jetty where we saw a turtle as long as a person, it was so big. Once we got back off the boat they told us that there had been some cancellations and that we could go diving at sipidan the following day YAY we were so excited! That night we both had pizza and beer, it was the best pizza since travelling oh I cant describe how good it was.

Tues 29th Dec – We were so lucky to get Sipidan permits and so excited. We had to pretend to be other people when we signed in on the island so we had to memorise someone else’s name, how its spelt, their age and nationality. Luckily we got it right in front of the guards and we were allowed to dive. Our first dive was a wall dive and we saw loads of white tip sharks, which looked scary and lots of turtles. On the next dive we saw a school of barracudas circling but the tides were very strong so we had to turn and go in a different direction. Our last dive was at the most famous site at Sipidan with a 600metre drop off the edge of the reef. We dived down into Turtle tomb cave and went a few metres into the blackness before turning round to see the massive blue hole where the entrance was. It was so cool. No need to ask what we had for dinner again J

Wed 30th Dec – This morning we got the 7.30am bus back to Sepilok with Sheila. Once we got back we had lunch and the 3 of us went to help out in the clinic. We bathed 3 of the babies in the sink and helped feed them all.

Thur 31st Dec – This morning Sheila Laura g and us two went to work in the clinic. We fed all the orang-utans and took 3 of the babies out to teach them to climb in the play area. They are so cute and if you go too far away from them they get scared, cry and grab you for a cuddle. In the evening 5 of our group and 3 others went to the sepilok nature reserve for new years eve. There was a huge buffet dinner and lots of wine – it was great! We played games at the table and then went up to dance the Malaysian dance the pucha pucha (don’t know how to spell it) in front of all the tourists and the staff loved it and were all joining in and taking pictures. Then they organised some games for us including musical chairs and the limbo, which Caroline won and got a free T-shirt (her second free one since travelling). We counted down to New Year and danced until we had to leave.

Fri 1st Jan – Another relaxing day. We ate more of our Christmas goodies and watched a film. The next day we got a flight to Kota Kinabalu ready to start our third rotation, Rasa Ria. Throughout this rotation we stayed in an apartment in Tuaran, which consisted of only two rooms, but we had A/C in the bedroom and a washing machine so it was good. That first evening we went to the market and got some local food.

Sun 3rd Jan – We begin our work at Rasa Ria Nature Interpretation Centre. We had cereal for breakfast while staying in the apartment which was a nice change from toast. Our driver was usually late picking us up but we nearly always made it to work for 7.30am, god knows how! The first thing we did was chop up fruit for all the animals including the sambar deers and the food for the nocturnal watch. Then we fed the tortoise, the chickens and the ducks before going to feed the whistling teal whom we named Rory. After that we would go to the orang-utans and feed them bread before giving them a bottle of electrolytes each. Once they were all fed we cleaned their cages, swept the tourist platform and cleaned the nursery. We look after 6 orang-utans here, 2 girls and 4 boys all aged from 2-4 years. Three of them get to go up to the tourist platform and play in the trees while three get to come with us to the nursery for enrichment. For the enrichment we decided to hide fruit around the nursery but as we were doing this Caroline discovered a big bearcat in the tree. We weren’t allowed back in there because they are very dangerous so we had to entertain the orang-utans in their cages. Once the orangs from the platform came back we bathed them and put them back in with the others. For lunch we ate at the staff canteen which was ok and then we relaxed on the sun loungers by the beach. In the afternoon we cut more fruit and fed all the animals again, cleaned out the cages while 3 of the orang-utans went back up to the tourist platform. When they got back we washed those three and put them back in with others before giving them their electrolytes and finally their big piles of fruit. After we finished work we went and got showered and changed in the staff toilet and sat outside again before eating dinner at the staff canteen. Picked up at 5:30 and once back we played some games before bed.

Mon 4th Jan – When we got to work today we were told that the bearcat had been lured out of the nursery with bananas, good start. We did our usual routine and got to take Katie, Cinta and Gembira to the nursery while Afiq, Jaya and Reg went to the tourist platform. We hid fruit for them to find and Gembira loved it. Cinta would swing around and find some but then come back to touch us and sit close for a minute before going off again. Katie was very independent even though she is the smallest in size. She was quite happy sitting on her own most of the time. We put them back in their cages before the others got back from the tourist platform. Reg the youngest has such long hair that once he’s been bathed he goes all fluffy. Jaya is the leader and tries to get out of washing so you have to hold both his hands even though he still grabs things with his legs ( Caroline got the hang of washing him though). Afiq wriggles a lot when you try to dry him and he likes trying to grab the towel and bite it. We relaxed in our lunch break again and our afternoon routine was the same except we got to hold a baby chick, feed the little deer some leaves from our hand and meet the slow loris, the python and the baby bearcats. We had dinner at the staff canteen again before going home to watch a film.

Tues 5th Jan – We took Gembira and Afiq into the nursery today to practise nest building with some leaves that we found. Afiq loved it and spent ages making his perfect by patting it down and biting bits to snap. Gembira loses interest very quickly and only seemed to want the leaves if another orang-utans wants or have them. The next day we had Gembira, Cinta and Katie again so we hid some food in a bamboo stick for them to get out. They weren’t very interested, as it was too easy for them so we decided to try out our Christmas bubbles. We blew the bubbles at them and they loved it. Gembira loved catching them in his mouth and trying to eat them from the floor. Katie was a bit wary of them and stayed out of the way but Cinta loved them and kept trying to catch them in her hands and making faces. Once we got back to tuaran we decided to get a hair cut, our first since leaving England and then went to a restaurant for some murtabaks which were sooo nice.

Thur 7th Jan – Today we had coconuts for enrichment. We took out Reg and Cinta, Reg cracked his open really quickly whereas we had to show Cinta how to do hers. They love eating them and Cinta kept trying to take Reg’s. At lunchtime we went for a swim in the sea which was lovely before going back to work. We decided to have dinner at the tourist restaurant at the resort, burger and beer J

Fri 8th Jan – This morning Cinta and Gembira came to the nursery where we had put some honey in one of the open coconuts. Gembira went straight to it and drank all the honey while Cinta discovered some of the hidden fruit covered in honey. Gembira was poking a stick into the coconut to get all the honey out which was cool to watch. Katie was brought down half way through and managed to get a couple of bits of fruit but we had to get the bubbles out again, as they were bored with the now empty coconut. Later in the morning we saw a dead bearcat that had been killed by a wild dog and all its insides were out, it was a horrible sight. The same day I had a slug in my lettuce from the staff canteen. After work we went to the Internet to book our flights to oz. As a reward we went for some more murtabaks.

Sat 9th Jan – Our last morning and we finally managed to get the tortoise to eat the long beans from our hands. We had Gembira and Reg with us in the nursery so we got Kelvin to cut some banana leaves for them to build nests with. Reg tried so hard but never seemed satisfied with his. Gembira kept stealing his leaves so he usually couldn’t finish which was sad. They did quite a bit of play fighting together too. We used our bubbles as it was our last day and Reg wasn’t sure about them at first but once he saw that Gembira loved them, he realised they were safe and kept chasing them and seemed perplexed when then disappeared. We ate at the posh restaurant again and had a beer, so relaxing. Afterwards we walked along the beach and went to see the horses.

Sun 10th Jan – We had a relaxing morning then got a flight back to Sandakan. In the evening we went with the others to a really nice rooftop cocktail bar and had a few drinks. The following day we went on a tour to the gomantong caves and then on a cruise along the kinabatang river. We got to the caves and in the jungle surrounding the entrance we saw some wild orang-utans. Once inside it really smelt and they took us off the tourist trail up inside the cave where the floor was poo crawling with cockroaches - it was so vile. The bats literally swarmed out of the cave, there were thousands all attached to the roof and walls and hundreds flying out and around it was horrible. We went to the river next and saw lots of probiscus monkeys, a python and another wild orang-utan. The rest house made us a buffet dinner as we were all back late which was a nice change.

Tues 12th Jan – In the morning we wandered down to the tourist platform to watch the orangs playing and then went to mile 4 for lunch and shopping. We went to 7th heaven and ate so much food, it was all so good and the smoothies were awesome. We looked around the shops, went to the supermarket and then ended up back in 7th heaven for dessert.

Wed 13th Jan – Today was our first day in the clinic. When we got there we fed the orang-utans, giving the babies 1-2 bananas, the juveniles 3-4 and the ones in the treatment room up to 6. If they have diarrhoea we give them apples, sugarcane or bread. Then they all get milk except the ones with diarrhoea who get electrolytes as does Ampal who doesn’t like milk. We also have to feed a hornbill that is being looked after by the nurses. He makes a lot of noise until we feed him his bananas. After they are all fed we scrub and dettol both rooms and hose them down. In the treatment room are 9 orangs but they are always changing. Today one of them called Anakara is being taken to KK as she broke her leg in the jungle. In the juveniles cages there are 9 including Michelle, a new graduate. The juveniles that weren’t going to play in the jungle gym got put in the big play cage together. We managed to get a total of 5 juveniles in the jungle gym but because it started raining we had to convince them down and put them in the play cage so they didn’t get ill (low immunity). We decided to bath a couple of the babies as we still had time left. There are 4 babies now that Michelle a 2-year-old female has graduated to the juveniles.

The babies are Kala, the only boy who is scared of climbing by himself, likes clinging onto you and has a dark patch on his top lip so he is easy to identify. Matamis a girl who is a little bigger than the other 3 and loves bath times and always splashes around in the water. Tara a girl who is fluffy and loves cuddles but is a very good little climber. Our favourite Wulan who is a little girl with fluffy crinkled hair, also a good climber but likes to be cuddles lots. Sometime when you put her back into her cage she cries and bangs her head on the bars which is really sad. So today we bathed Matamis who loved it of course and Wulan who was ok as long as you held both her hands but she would not sit in the bath. After lunch we took 3 of the babies out to play. Kala wouldn’t go very far but he did get braver as the afternoon went on. Wulan and Tara however were great and went out on the high ropes and were picking leaves and playing with each other. They came back from time to time to get some attention but enjoyed playing on the rope over the tree the most.

Thur 14th Jan – We fed everyone as usual also giving Ampal his build up paste. We have to put it along the length of our finger then put our finger in his mouth and he sucks it off our finger. Then we gave them their drinks and washed the floors. We managed to take 5 juveniles out to play on the jungle gym while Caroline cleaned out their cages so well that they shined. The juveniles are Michelle, Salemat, Alain, Ceria, Sen, Yoda, Ampal, Tambi, Rubin and Gamai. Michelle is the new young female. Salemat came back from Rasa Ria in Oct, Alain who is very fluffy and big and is the one who has bitten Caroline, Ceria is a well behaved little one as is Sen but Sen is getting cheekier. Yoda likes to grab you and his feeding bottle and never comes back in once he is on the jungle gym, naughty. Ampal is 7 but he is so small and skinny, he is so sweet and loves picking which piece of fruit he wants. Tambi can be naughty sometimes. Rubin is big but is usually well behaved. Gamai is the one who will punch you in the face and pull your hair out as we have experienced. We brought all the juveniles’ back in for lunch but surprise surprise Yoda refused to co-operate so we had to leave him out there. When we returned in the afternoon one of the nurses managed to grab him and put him back into his cage – big achievement! After doing the afternoon feed and clean we decided to bath Michelle and Matamis as they hadn’t been out in ages due to them having diarrhoea. They were so well behaved and enjoyed the time out of their cages. At the nurses request we all began work on cleaning the juveniles play cage, it was disgusting and never ending. Unfortunately we finish the day without completing the task…..something to look forward to in the morning lol

Fri 15th Jan – This morning it was raining so we couldn’t take any of the orangs out to play. Instead we cleaned some cages and bathed Sen and Ceria. Sen was unsure at first but ended up splashing around and making a big mess. Ceria didn’t like the water on his face but loved drying in the towel. Neither of them wanted to go back into the cages. When Caroline was sweeping the juveniles area Gamai decided to grab her hair and smashed her face against the bars – ouch!! In the afternoon we did the usual feed and clean and then sat with the babies in the big play cage because it was too wet to take them out. Whilst sat in there a visitor arrives at the clinic, Oscar, a large adult male from the jungle. He tried to enter the babies cage whilst the babies and us were trapped inside. We had to shout for help and pull on the cage door to stop him opening it and coming inside. The babies were so scared and so were we lol Later we finished cleaning the juveniles play cage.

Sat 16th Jan – A very productive morning. We washed Tambi and he loved it. He kept jumping from one sink to the other and didn’t want to get out and get dry. We had to let the water out and dry him in the sink before he went back in his cage. Then we took 5 orangs out to the jungle gym. Kirsty carried Michelle out for her first climb in the jungle and she loved it, she kept trying to copy the older ones. Ceria was a good boy as usual and was swinging around like tarzan. Selamat and Alan were good until it was time to come in and we had to bribe them with bananas. Gamai was naughty as usual biting people and refusing to go in his cage but us two managed to force him in with the help of the nurse. After lunch Caroline cleaned the babies cages and we bathed all of the babies and gave them lots of cuddles.

Sun 17th Jan – Today we put 6 of the juveniles in the big play cage and put the babies in their play cage too. It was raining and we had no power or water so we had to put buckets out to collect rain water to be able to clean everything and wash our hands. We decided to bath Rubin and he really liked stamping in the water to splash us but didn’t like it when we poured water on his head. He kept hold of Kirsty’s hand the whole time. He is quite a big juvenile but seems like a gentle giant and just wants fuss. After that we played with the babies for a while then washed Kala and Wulan. Kala loved it and sat down in the water and relaxed whereas Wulan kept a firm hold on Caroline and kept cuddling into her making Caroline all wet and soapy too.

Mon 18th Jan – We awoke to a bright room and amazing weather. We rushed to the clinic to get all the feeding and cleaning done enabling us to take advantage of the weather and take some orangs out. In the morning we took out Gamai, Yoda, Alan, Ampal, Rubin and Tambi. They were so well behaved until it was time to go in then they all started playing up and biting. We managed to get them all in apart from Yoda and Alan who were nesting up a tree. We left them there while we had lunch. In the afternoon we put all the juveniles in the big play cage while we took out the babies. When we were playing with the babies we spotted an orang on top of the juveniles cage, it was Gamai! He had broken a bar on the cage and escaped. We had to catch him and return all the juveniles to their night cages. Very frustrating as we had just spent days cleaning the big play cage for them!

Tues 19th Jan – Another great morning, Anekara arrived back from KK after having her leg operation. She looked so cute with her leg in plaster. We fed and cleaned all the orangs and took out Selamat, Tambi, Rubin, Sen, Ceria and Ampal. They were so well behaved and loved playing in the trees. This was the first time we got them all back into their cages without any problems, result! The afternoon brought a storm so we couldn’t take any of the orangs out to play; instead we bathed the babies and Nonong, a paralysed orang that was covered in sick. A very productive day!

Weds 20th Jan – took out Selamat, Rubin, Ampal and Gamai in the morning. Caroline cleaned Ampals cage while he was out playing nicely as it was disgusting. In the afternoon we took out Wulan, Tara, Kala, Matamis, Michelle and Nonong.

Thurs 21st Jan – Last day of work. We bathed some of them but Gamai obviously didn’t want to be bathed and hid under the table refusing to go near the sink so we had to put him back in. In the afternoon we took out Wulan, Tara, Matamis, Michelle and Nonong as Kala had diarrhoea. Unfortunately Michelle ate some itchy leaves and her lips became swollen and sore so we had to try and get her to drink water but it hurt her lips so she didn’t want to. We kept them out until gone 4pm so that we could get some professional pictures taken of us with the orangs. It was amazing! Before putting them in for the night we gave them some fruit and little Wulan loved her fruit so much that she ended up with purple/pink colour all around her lips. She looked like a little girl playing dress up wearing lipstick. She kept puckering her lips out to us for a kiss and she looked so cute giving kisses wearing lipstick.

Fri 22nd Jan – Today was our day off so we decided to have a lay in and then head to the tourist platform to see the Orangs playing one last time. Unfortunately the weather was really bad so we didn’t see many. As we began walking to the exit we were trapped by some angry male macaques, we didn’t want to risk walking past them so we decided to walk back the way we came in. However, that boardwalk was also covered in macaques, we got some sticks and tried to scare them but it had the reverse effect….they started chasing us and bearing their teeth. We all ran away screaming!

The leaving party was tonight and we all had quite a bit to drink and lets say it was an eventful night lol. The food was great and so was the music and we danced all night long.

Sat 23rd Jan – We flew out of Sandakan to KK where we stayed in our 5* resort one last time. Some of us went to the night watch and it was really cool seeing the deer laying down to sleep. One of the deer came and poked his head through the opening we were watching through and was touching Caroline’s hand with his wet nose.

Sun 24th Jan – We have spent the morning horse riding along the beach. We even went into the sea on horseback. This is the life. We fly at 19:15 and after three different flights and a stop at the amazing Singapore airport we will arrive in Australia at 17:30 on the 25th of Jan – Bring it on!

Australia

Mon 25th Jan – After the spending the night sleeping on some chairs outside the hotel in Singapore airport and flying all day we finally arrived in Sydney, Australia. We got the shuttle bus into the city and checked into our hostel. We spent the next two nights in a six bed dorm. On the 26th, Australia day we went to the museum and then wandered around the park where people were celebrating. That evening we went to the harbour and watched an amazing firework display. The next day we checked out and changed hostels because the woman on reception was so rude. We booked into Wake up hostel, one of the largest and most modern in Sydney. Of course this was reflected in the price and it was expensive just for our beds in the 8 bed dorm but it was so much nicer. After checking in, we managed to complete all our chores. We got our bank account set up, a sim card registered and a medicare card. Later on we had dinner in china town, yum, prawn crackers.

Thur 28th Jan – We booked a campervan for our road trip – woo hoo!! Can’t wait. Afterwards we visited Bondi beach and walked along the cliff top and relaxed in a café before doing a nice bit of shopping. The next day we went to the wildlife centre and aquarium, it was wicked. We had our photograph taken with a koala and saw kangaroos, wallabies, dugongs and a duck billed platypus. That night 4 of us went out for the traditional Aussie dinner…pie… and then spent hours playing cards together.

Sat 30th Jan – Today us two and our new friend Sophie decided to visit the zoo. We had to get the ferry across the harbour to get there giving us some amazing views. The zoo was really good and we saw all kinds of animals and shows. That night the 3 of us went out for drinks and of course some chips and cheese on the way home. Once home we got lured into the hostel bar for more drinks and played pool. The next morning we didn’t get up till lunchtime so the 3 of us went for all you can eat pizza hut. We walked up to the harbour and watched some freaky street shows. That night we went out for drinks again but we also did a pub quiz. We came joint 2nd so we had to do rock, paper, scissors to see which team got the second prize of two beers each and which team got the third prize of one free beer each. We got the third prize so we each got a free schooner of beer.

Mon 1st Feb – Caroline’s birthday! Today we started off by having an all you can eat pizza hut before walking all the way up to the opera house again (we had already walked up there four times and it is about an hour round trip). Thankfully we managed to do the "essential tour of the opera house" which was interesting. After a mad rush we picked up our campervan woohoo! We took it for its first drive to the supermarket to stock up and then went to collect our bags from the hostel, which took us over an hour because of all the one way streets. At last we set off after saying goodbye to our friend and drove west towards the Blue Mountains. Once it got dark we decided to find somewhere to sleep. We ended up in Penrith parked on a residential road. The camper proved very comfortable and we both had a great sleep.

Tues 2nd Feb – We jumped out of bed into the front of our camper and began our drive to Katoomba. When we arrived Caroline cooked up a wicked fry up. We sat outside on our comfy deck chairs with a fold out table and enjoyed our first home cooked breakfast in 8 and a half months. We relaxed for a bit before going to scenic world where we rode in a glass bottom cable car, walked for 2 hours around and down the three sister rock formations, rode the steepest funicular railway in the world and saw some amazing views. For the rest of the day we relaxed in our campervan eating and organising where else we want to go on our road trip.

Wed 3rd Feb – Today we drove up all the windy roads to the Jenolan caves. They were awesome. We went on an adventure caving tour on a route called the plughole. We had to squeeze through really tiny spaces it was so much fun. After we finished we drove all the way back to Sydney and spent the night on a road in Bondi with a beer and a takeaway. The next morning we decided to leave the campervan in Bondi and get the train to central Sydney to avoid the stress of parking. We managed to pick up our bankcards and our post and get there and back on the train before our free parking ended. After that we got in the camper and headed up north to Newcastle. Once there, we went to a really lovely caravan park right on Stockton beach. In the evening we had jacket potatoes made in the camper and a beer. After dinner we got a ferry over to the centre to meet our friend Amanda whom we had met at our orangutan project. It took us over an hour to get there and the ferry crossing only took 3 minutes so it was a lot more walking than we thought when we had looked at the map. We had an awesome dinner and lots of schooners before moving the harbour bar where we sat next to the water and drank some more. Got the last ferry back at 11:00pm.

Fri 5th Feb – We had a nice lay in this morning followed by a good fry up. While Kirsty was cooking Caroline went for a run on the beach in her new running shoes. Most of the day was spent drinking beer and lazying around in the sun (and in the short rain showers). We walked along a long stone embankment stretching out into the sea where lots of ships had crashed and we could see the steel hull of one of the ship wrecks. It was lovely here everyone was so nice and laidback. They all loved fishing and people just came over and talked to us when we looked lost, so nice.

Sat 6th Feb – This morning we drove from Newcastle up to Port Stephens. When we arrived we walked along the harbour and ended up buying a bodyboard. We spent the afternoon at our campsite bodyboarding in the freezing cold sea before deciding to go in the heated pool, which was lovely. The next day we went dolphin watching, amazing. We saw 3 dolphins and they all swam so close to the boat when we were in the boom net. The boom net was fun it was a net hanging off the side of the boat that we sat in as the boat was following the dolphins. Afterwards we set off for port macquarie, on the way we saw a horse show so decided to pull over and watch. We were kitted out with our deckchairs, drinks, sandwiches and of course tortilla chips with humous and salsa – very enjoyable! That evening we went body boarding in freezing water again and spent the night in the beach carpark. The night consisted of beers and peanuts for starters and beers and pesto pasta for main and beers and chocolate digestives for desert. Oh and lots of games of cards, uno and the backpacker game. Wicked day.

Mon 8th Feb – Drove from Port macquarie to Coffs harbour. Our new camp site was wicked with a jumping pillow (a large trampoline/bouncy castle thing) and a pool with slides. We spent the day relaxing and playing in the pool and on the jumping pillow. Early the next morning we visited the koala hospital and saw a baby koala and watched some of them get given their medicine. It was nice but some of the stories about previous koalas that had died were sad. Next we went on to Timbertown. It was a park built to be like the timber town in the 1800s. We spent most of the time there stroking the horses but we did watch a bullock demonstration, ride a penny farthing bike, did some wine tasting and of course some chips with gravy. In the afternoon we went to the porpoise pool. There we put our hands in the water and when we were patient the dolphins would come and swim under our hands so we could stroke them. They also came up to the edge of the pool, put their head over the side and gave you a kiss on the cheek. When all the other tourists had gone, us two played catch with the dolphins while we waited for the seals to come out. When the seals were ready we got into the pool with Solomen a very large male seal and he swam round the pool with us on his back. He was so strong. Then we met pearl a female and she jumped onto our backs like a piggy back and we fed her some fish. The cutest one was Maxine and we played with her for ages playing piggy in the middle and throwing things for her to swim and get. She loved kisses though and kept swimming over and putting her face onto our cheeks for kisses and wrapping her fins around us for a cuddle. She was so lovely. After an excellent day we drove to Byron bay and almost ran out of petrol, very scary!. After ages of driving around in the dark we finally managed to find a campsite with space for us, YAY

Weds 10th Feb – Today we checked out the local town stopping for a lunchtime treat, Hogs Breath Café, where Kirsty had nachos. That night we went out to a nightclub called cheeky monkeys. We drank lots of Tooheys our favourite beer and there was lots of competitions going on which included people taking there clothes off if they lost a coin toss. The girl that won that game was jumping around in only her knickers when she won. Needless to say we watched from afar and kept our clothes on. Once the games finished everyone was dancing on the tables and having a good night, great atmosphere. When we left we searched for somewhere that sold chips and nowhere did so we walked back to the camper and went to bed.

Thurs 11th Feb – This morning we woke up tired and soldiered on as we had to drive to surfers paradise. We made one stop along the way at palm beach, which was a gorgeous little bay. Once at surfers paradise we set up camp and went bodyboarding again. The beach was lovely, the waves were big and the water wasn’t freezing. Afterwards we went for a dip in the pool before chilling out all afternoon.

Fri 12th Feb - Today we got up early as we had planned to go to Movie World however once we got there and stood waiting for an hour and a half we discovered our clocks were wrong and we were there 2 hours before the park opened - great start! Thankfully the day got better. Our favorite rides were Scooby Doo Rollercoaster and Shrek 4D. Afterwards we treated ourselves to a McDonalds as we had taken a packed lunch into the theme park as it was soo expensive in there. We spent the night in a posh residential area opposite the theme parks. The next day we went to Wet n Wild, it was full of awesome rides but Kirsty burnt her feet on the ground and had big sore blisters. That night we found a cheap camp site where Kirsty got some free books, Caroline got some peace and quiet lol

Sun 14th Feb - Valentines Day - we found an excellent shopping centre and bought some much needed clothes and food J once we’d spent all our money we set up camp near the beach and cooked some FANTASTIC hotdogs with onions and ketchup (caroline had 4). In the evening we went to a dinner and show at Draculars, a haunted house. To enter we had to go on a ghost train where they took a video of each person screaming, these videos where then played during dinner - hilarious! The staff were all dressed up and in character, it was an amazing night! We merrily found our way back to the campervan which was parked outside someone’s house down the road lol. A great night!

Mon 15th Feb - Not feeling the best we decided to eat breakfast and drive to Noosa so that we could nap. The drive took three hours so once we got to Noosa we went for a short walk on the beach, a swim in the pool and then went to bed VERY early. On Tues we drove to the main beach where we had a picnic in the park before body boarding in the sea. Unfortunately, Kirsty was stung by a BlueBottle jellyfish (the most painful in the area) so we went back to the campsite and relaxed with beer and pizza.

Weds 17th Feb - We got up very early this morning and drove to Tin Can Bay. We stood on the beach in the water with, and fed a wild dolphin, his name was Mystique. It was wicked especially as he was wild so he chose if he wanted to approach you and get the food. Unfortunately he was in the wars as he had recently been attacked by a shark, leaving him with a chunk out of his fin. It was really great seeing a wild dolphin that close and hand feeding him 2 pieces of fish each. Afterwards we drove to Hervey Bay and booked a tour for the following day - Fraser Island 2 days and 1 night.

Thurs 18th Feb - We got the ferry to Fraser island, the largest sand island in the world. Once we arrived, we boarded our 4x4 bus! The island was beautiful. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but we still managed to go and visit the pinnacles and a shipwreck. Then we wadded down a pretty stream taking in the beauty of Fraser island. Our tour guide even took us to see the champagne pools from the top of a cliff. Whilst driving down the beach in the bus (there are no roads on Fraser island) we saw our first wild dingo. The beach was really long and we thought the sea would be nice to swim in but luckily our tour guide told us that there are large deep gutters just off the shore which is where all the sharks like to hunt, so we decided against swimming. That night we had a Mexican buffet dinner yum yum. Then went over to the bar for a few drinks and went to bed in our 4 bed shared room. The next morning we got up and had a lovely buffet breakfast. Today was a much nicer day and we first went to lake Mackenzie which was just amazing with gorgeous clear blue water. It was so so beautiful. Then we trekked over massive sand dunes to get to lake wabby which was the opposite of the other lake as it had bright green water and was full of catfish.

Sat 20th Feb - We arrived at mon repo on the Saturday and there was no spaces for the turtle tours that night so we booked for the following day. We then went and settled into our campsite which was right on the beach where the turtles came to lay their eggs. The next day we were down on the beach when we spotted some conservation workers digging in the sand. It turned out they were digging out old nests to check if there were any live baby turtles still in there that couldn’t get out. It was so exciting we sat and watched while they found some live little babies in there and they even let us hold one aww he was so small. Then we kept an eye on them as they made there way down to the sea to make sure they made it. We went to the tour that night and it was very different from what we had seen earlier. The whole nest hatched and we could see hundreds of babies crawling over each other to make it out and into the sea. There were so many babies that some people were chosen as markers to stand and hold a torch to help the little babies find their way to the sea safely without anyone standing on them. Caroline was chosen and had to stand in the middle of hundreds of baby turtles as they ran over her feet to get to the sea. It was really good.

Mon 22nd Feb - The next day we drove to a small town called 1770. There wasn’t much there but we booked our dive trip out to the great barrier reef. That night we were walking to the showers when Caroline stepped on a snake argh! Luckily it didn’t bite her as she reacted quickly and then it slithered up a tree … it was scary. In the morning we were up early to board the boat ready for the two hour boat trip to the reef. On the way out Caroline got sea sick for the first time ever. Once out there the water was gorgeous and clear (never anywhere as good as the similans though) and on our first dive we saw quite a few sharks. In between dives Caroline snorkeled and Kirsty jumped off the top of the boat. The next dive was good as Caroline spotted an octopus and showed everyone.

Thur 25th Feb - We arrived in Airlie beach and it seemed like a real backpacker town. We got a lot of stuff done here including sending post and joining a job website. Saturday night we decided to go for a “quiet drink”, think we stumbled home at 1am - oops!! We sobered up the next morning by swimming in the lagoon before heading off in our campervan.

Sun 28th Feb - We decided to stop randomly at a remote campsite in Rockingham and ended up staying two nights as it was so nice. The view of the beach from the campervan was awesome. We spent all our time in the pool and watching a goanna (moniter lizard). It was nice to just relax for a couple of days and use the camp bbqs to make dinner.

3rd March - Today was our last day with the campervan so we decided to treat ourselves to a 5* caravan park in Cairns - AMAZING! 3 different swimming pools, cycle tracks, 2 giant jumping pillows, crazy golf - the list is endless. Kirsty and I tried to do as much as possible. We even went to the outdoor cinema. The next morning we had to return the campervan and begin our search for a job L

4th March - 11th March

Cairns - We spent 8 enjoyable days looking for a job and eating our free evening meals at the Woolshed (Kirsty had chilli con carne every night). We stayed at caravella backpackers in a 4 bed dorm that we had to ourselves some nights. It was a nice 10 minutes walk into town along the esplanade. Met a lovely german girl called Jessica who we went to the Ultimate Party Bus with - very good night! Caroline participated in the free keep fit program which almost killed her lol! We were lucky with the weather and went to the lagoon most days. Just as our bank accounts were empty we found a job for 2 bairmaids in an outback town called Croydon….the next day we were on our way there! Once we left Cairns the cyclones hit, perfect timing!

Fri 12th March - Thur 10th June

Corydon - After a 9 hour bus journey we arrived to a pub…..and nothing else!! It definitely was the real outback, no question about that!! We were shown to our rooms which looked like prison cells and told that our original 50 hours a week work had now been cut to 3 hrs a day (21 hrs a week). We were so angry but decided to see it through. We spent a few hours scrubbing our rooms from top to bottom before we were called to start work. No induction, no nothing just get behind the bar and do your job. Over the next few days we started to bond with our manager, Steve ,and things were looking up. We only worked 3 hours a day. One of us worked from 3pm-6pm on the bar and the other worked 6pm-9pm on the bar. We didn’t
t do much during the day except go swimming at the pool.

Two weeks in and Steve decides he’s leaving, lucky for us the new managers (Karen & Mike) were nice and we were given lots more hours. We worked from 10am in the morning until 2pm cleaning the motel units and getting them up to a good standard. Then one of us would work the bar from 3pm until closing which was between 10 and 12. The other would pick Madison (Karens & Mikes 6 year old daughter) up from school and then take her to the park to play. After playtime we would have dinner with her before getting her washed and putting her to bed. They were there for 7 weeks then we got some new managers.

Christine and Joe (and dog bub) were our next managers. They were really great people. Our work routine stayed the same minus the child minding. In the evenings we would take turns doing the bar, one did 3pm-7pm and the other did 7pm- close. On busy nights we would both work but that wasn’t very often.

Opps we have forgotten Phil and Val who were here sporadically throughout our stay. They own the lease with their daughter Christine (a different Christine), and Steve our first manager was their son. They are 80 years old and like things very different to how most people here like them. They were the bane of our existence and they took over for our last week when Chris and Joe walked out after 3 weeks (due to the way Phil was treating them).

The bar here is very different to English bars. They call bottles, stubbies and they have schooners not pints. When you order a spirit and mix you have to pick which sized glass you want, 7oz or 10oz. Locals don
t ask for another drink they just take the stubbie out of their stubbie holder/cooler and place it at the edge of the bar . They dont give you money from their wallet either, they just put all their money on the bar in front of them and we take what we need each time. Also when they buy a can (called a tin) we have to open it for them. So really we do everything for the customers except drink their drink lol. The stubbies and cans are all kept in an eskie (sorry, cool box) full of ice as it is so hot out here.

In the three months we worked in Croydon we only had 2 days off. The first was to go to Karumba on Good Friday and the second was when Glen took us to his cattle station, Mittagong.

KARUMBA - One of the local boys took us to Karumba for the day. It’s a little fishing town next to the sea but we couldn’t go swimming as there was too many crocodiles. Had a lovely lunch, caroline had fish and chips and kirsty had pie.

MITTAGONG - When we first got there we watched some cattle being sorted and loaded onto a double decker road train (a very large truck). Its was very early and already it was very dusty and hot. Then we drove out in the ute to where the ATV’s were kept. Glen drove the ATV with both of us on the back, Caroline kept jumping off to open the gates. We drove out into the bush over creeks and knocking over small trees that got in our way. We each took it in turns to go in the helicopter to experience mustering in the helicopter. It was scary at first as the helicopter had no sides and it kept diving and spinning to move the cattle towards the yard. After a full day of mustering we managed to get all the cattle into the yard expect one bull that didn’t want to co-operate. In the end one of the utes pushed it all the way into the yard, it was very funny! On the way back we stopped off for some target practice. Glen got out his Rifle and set both of us two targets which were small water bottles. We both hit the targets perfectly. Afterwards we went to find a kangaroo to practice some more but for the first time ever couldn’t find any. Back to the pub for a few beers. Great day!

Memories

GREEN TREE FROGS - Every time we clean the toilets and showers there are so many green tree frogs. We love them and always save them. We found one in someone’s room and it hadn
t had water for quite a few hours and was so dry it was nearly dead so we picked it up and kept it in our bathroom sink to revive it. Some of the customers are scared of them and wont use their toilets when they are in there so have to go and pick the little frogs out and set them free. Kirsty always put them near the pool so they can swim. When we have them in our toilet we just wee past them J and when we flush its like a spa for them lol. When you pick them up you have to have wet hands as their skin is sensitive. When we pick them up they crawl up our arms with their sticky little hands oooh we love them so much.WILDLIFE - There is lots of wildlife in the bushland. On our morning run (not everyday and usually just Caroline), kangaroos and wallabies jump around and dingos do their own thing. When we are standing behind the bar at sunset all we can see out the doors is a bright pink sky (they have the best sunsets here) and wallabies jumping along near the roadside. We had 4 snakes in the pub in one month! One time caroline was outside collecting glasses and she told all the cowboys that there was a snake under their table. No-one believed her until one young boy check and saw it…we’ve never seen so many grown men jump up so quick and scream lol. Most of them hate snakes so they killed it. There are also soo many mosquito’s that they have someone who drives a truck round at night and sprays loads of mosquito killer around the town. The size of the spiders here is ridiculous. They are horrible and there are lots of little spiders that jump. The amount of flies we get in our drinks in the evening is silly, all the flies like the lights even though they are special yellow lights so it doesn’tt attract them as much. There was soo many poisonous cane toads in Croydon, we used to have about 20 of them outside our donga. They are soo ugly and some of them are the size of grapefruits!

TRANSPORT - As most people in Croydonshire live on stations some of them fly their helicopters to the pub to collect beer.

ENTERTAINEMENT - With not much to do in Croydon the locals make their own entertainment by playing the guitar and having a sing song.

FLOODING - In the wet season many places in Australia get severely flooded preventing people leaving their stations. Supplies are then flown in. When we first arrived in Croydon there were lots of people trying to get to the next town but because the roads were covered with water (1m high) they were stuck for 2 weeks.

Thursday 10th June - Our last day of work

Friday 11th June - Up early on ready for the 2 hour drive to Normanton, arriving at 7am. The first events at the rodeo were the camp drafts. This involved someone on horseback rounding up cattle and getting them to circle around two different poles in the arena and then through the gates. The beer began at 10.00am so by 2pm we thought it was a good idea to check into our motel and have a quick break from the alcohol. In the afternoon we returned to the Rodeo and watched the young children rounding up cattle - it was soo cute! As the sun when down out came the bullocks, this is where we saw some real action! After many more beers and some dancing we called it a night and went back to the motel.

Saturday 12th June - First stop…The café for a full english breakfast then back to the Rodeo grounds. After watching all the events and sitting on hard metal seats our bums were very sore, the solution….beer! A couple of the locals from Croydon took part in the Wild Horse Race which involved them catching a wild horse, holding it, putting a saddle on it and a jockey to ride it across the finish line. The event was amazing as they were really wild horses that didn’t want to co-operate. The local boys did well but the horse just wanted to buck on the spot rather than go across the finish line. In the evening it was the Bull rides, lets just say we’re surprised no-one got hurt! The Bulls were frantically trying to throw their riders off and when they did they would charge anyone in the arena including the quad bikes. All the cowboys were jumping over the gates to get away - crazy! When it was finished we all moved to the bar area where we were dancing and drinking all night.

Sunday 13th June - In need of some food we go to the bakery for some freshly baked pies (caroline had two) then we checked out the motel and went to the Rodeo one last time. It was the finals today so all the riders were superb including the tiny kids. Get back to the Croydon 8pm. Feeling very tired we went to bed early to catch up on some sleep.

Monday 14th June - Today was all about chores; washing our clothes, packing our bags, throwing away rubbish and trying to post a parcel. Note the TRYING; stupid lady in the post office didn’t know how to post a parcel to England…so why is she working there I have no idea! Anyway, once we had completed all that a few of the locals had organized a leaving BBQ for us. After many goodbyes we have our last sleep in Croydon.

Tuesday 15th June - Today we packed up the last of our things before catching a small mail plane back to Cairns (which was free). We were both sad about leaving Croydon but at the same time couldn’t wait to get back to Cairns and begin the next part of our trip. The plane journey was bumpy which kirsty really didn’t enjoy….however the thought of going back to the Woolshed in Cairns for free Chilli Con Carne kept her going. We were having a lovely sleep until a very drunk sicky girl came into our dorm room - gross!!

Wednesday 16th June - Checked out of our dorm room feeling like we hadn’t slept at all and headed for a good McDonalds breakfast. Afterwards it was onto the depot to pick up our luxury 4 berth campervan. When we were first shown it we couldn’t believe how big it was, it was a real home. Once we had been taught how an automatic works we left the depot very slowly and carefully towards our destination - Charters Towers. We didn’t realize how far it was and ended up driving in the dark - luckily we didn’t hit any kangaroos!! Thursday 17th we were up at the crack of dawn leaving Charters Towers behind - next stop Mt Isa.

Friday 18th June - Unable to book the hard times mining tour we left Mt Isa at 9am and headed for Tenant Creek. After another long day of driving we arrived in Tenant Creek at 4pm. Found a nice little caravan park with a local Chinese takeaway - BONUS! As we walked to the takeaway, which just happened to be in a pub (oh what a shame) we discovered that the time difference from Queensland to the Northern Territory caught us out once again.

Saturday 19th June - Woke up early and watched the sun rise in our lovely big bed. Oats for breakfast then on the road to the Devils Marbles. Lets just say it was definitely worth the two hour round trip - it was gorgeous. Afterwards it was back in the campervan and on the Mataranka Springs. We decided to stay at the Mataranka Resort which was full of Kangaroos wanting to chase and torment us. Good night though!

Sunday 20th June - First lay in since having the luxury campervan. After breakfast we went for a drive around the town and went to explore the Bitter Springs. It was gorgeous - really hot, clear water. In the evening we watched a country singer and ate at the resort restaurant.

Monday 21st June - Up early for the final leg of the journey. After driving for less than five minutes an Eagle decides to fly straight into the front of our van, luckily for us it didn’t smash the window screen. They clearly aren’t the most intelligent animals! Decided it was a good idea to ring up and book a hostel in Darwin rather than just turning up…good job as it was the last room available.

Tuesday 22nd June - Unsure what we wanted to do for the next few days/months we decided to go to a campervan hire company and discussed prices for our next road trip. While thinking about the quote he had given us we investigated a campervan that was for sale. The girls selling the van were good English lasses so we ended up going into town drinking with them and getting rather very drunk. Decided against buying the campervan as they didn’t have all the paperwork.

Wednesday 23rd June - Today was hell. We both felt like we had been run over by a huge trucks. We were so ill we could barely walk to the shop to get food. Needless to say we didn’t do anything except mope around the hostel. The famous words were said many time “I’m never drinking again”.

Thursday 24th June - Feeling much better today we walked backwards and forwards viewing lots of different campervans for sale. It was a long but exciting day. Who thought campervans could be soo different?!

Friday 25th June - Today consisted of more viewings. After much thought, lists and negotiation we bought a little green van, her name was Cal. To celebrate we used the two free meal vouchers that we had been given!

Saturday 26th June - Set the alarm really early so that we had time to pack, check out of the hostel and get to the bank. We must have been on super speed as we got it all done and still had time to spare. We handed over the money, signed some papers and got the keys to our green little van. First stop….the camping shop! After spending lots of money on flash stoves and lanterns we began our next road trip in our own van. We drove for a few hours and then checked into a nice caravan park and began organizing our new baby.

Sunday 27th June - Up with the sun and on the road from Katherine across the border and into Western Australia. We stopped at the first little town called Kununara - beautiful! On a notice board we saw a job advertised “Grapefruit workers needed for 2-3 weeks” - Perfect, so we applied the next day!

Monday 28th June - Left the caravan park and went to the camping shop to get some gas for our new stove! Turns out the job was a lie to get people to sign up to the agency so we left and drove to Wyndham for some scenic views. Stayed at a free parking spot by the side of the road and saw our first shooting star - AMAZING!

Tuesday 29th June - Another full day of driving. We decided to stop at a free camping spot overlooking more scenic views and built our first fire which we both fell asleep in front of at 7pm. The Kimberley’s is the most beautiful area we have seen in all of Australia…so far!

Wednesday 30th June - Today we drove from Halls Creek to Broom with a quick stop at Geikie Gorge, it was a long and very boring drive. Lunch consisted of rice and tomato ketchup - ummm! Made it to Broome at 5pm and checked into a real caravan park just for the shower and laundry facilities. Had a quick walk along the beach which was only 400m for our van.

Thursday 1st July - With our bodies in a routine of getting up at 6am so the chance of having a lay in was nil. We booked another night at the caravan park and went shopping to stock up on some food. By the time we got out of the shopping center the sun was shining bright so we made a picnic and sat on the beach for the afternoon. BBQ feast for dinner and then an early night.

Friday 2nd July - Checked out of the caravan park and spent the day at the Cable beach. It was so good just to relax and not have to drive anywhere. Watched the most amazing sunset and saw camels walking across the beach. Afterwards we went to find a free little parking spot just outside of town.

Saturday 3rd July - Today we left Broom and spent the day driving further south. Found a gorgeous campsite next to a large creek where we had a roaring fire and yummy fajitas. It was a lovely peaceful night camping in the bush; with the creek flowing next to us and the cattle wandering past our camp.

Sunday 4th July - Woke up to a dull and cloudy day. Had breakfast, packed lunch and got on the road heading for Ningaloo. The journey was very ambitious and the weather got progressively worse so we decided to stop before getting to our destination.

Monday 5th June - Drove the rest of the way to Ningaloo only to find out that you can’t stay in the National Park as it was full. We were both very disappointed but decided to stay at a nearby caravan park and try our luck camping at Ningaloo tomorrow.

Tuesday 6th June - Left the caravan park really early to get in line for the Cape Range National Park (Ningaloo) camping. We were so lucky as there was 5 caravans/cars in front of us and about 6 behind us. We were the last people that were allowed to camp - BONUS! When we drove into the National Park we were greeted by Kangaroos, the scenery was absolutely amazing and well worth the wait. First of all we did a walk to see a big gorge and then onto Sandy Bay for some snorkeling. The water was freezing but the clear turquoise water was just calling us. As we were drying off on a rock a big scary fly decided to land on caroline, as kirsty was trying to get it away caroline stood on a pointy bit of dead coral. That was the end of the snorkeling and walking for the day.

Wednesday 7th July - Breakfast today was bacon and eggs followed by some snorkeling at South Mandu. Between us we shared a junior size mask and snorkel, and a pair of goggles. Everyone else had proper gear. But we enjoyed ourselves! In the afternoon we did the Mandu Mandu walking trail, lets say it was more like climbing. We walked through the gorge meeting kangaroos on our way before half scrambling and half climbing up the side of the cliff. We had some beautiful views of the gorge and ningaloo reef.

Thursday 8th July - Today we were lucky enough to get moved to a different camp site called Kurajong. We had a lovely site that was just 80m from the sea. We decided to put up our tent for the first time. We had the van as a car and bed, the tent as our living room and the space in between as a kitchen/dining room. After setting up Camp we decided to go to Oyster Stacks for some more snorkeling. It was our best snorkel at Ningaloo and it helped that the water wasn’t so cold (or maybe we are just getting used to it). We then went to the information centre to buy some souvenirs and then went to the lakeside beach to have a picnic. When we got back to camp caroline did some sunbathing and then we went for a walk and a dip in the sea.. It was really good as we had the beach to ourselves.

Friday 9th July - In the morning we chilled out around the campsite as the wind was quite strong and the sun wasn’t out making it extremely cold. Later we decided to go to Turquoise Bay, it was gorgeous. There wasn’t many people there as it was still cold and the tide was high making it really good for snorkeling. Another picnic lunch on the beach before returning to the van to warm up.

Saturday 10th July - Last day at Ningaloo so we decided to snorkel at Turquoise Bay one last time. When we got there there were very strong current so we decided to give it a miss. We left Ningaloo and drove to Exmouth to do a big food shop before we went to coral bay. Once in Coral Bay we checked into Bayview caravan park. It was very embarrassing as we got stuck in the sand trying to get to our site. The locals thought it was very funny but were all hands on in helping us get out. At one point we thought the van was going to topple over, we couldn’t watch. Luckily the caravan park assigned us a different site. We couldn’t wait to get in the showers as the Ningaloo National Park didn’t have any, result was we hadn’t washed in almost a week (except in the sea). In the afternoon we wandered around the shops and booked a wildlife tour for the following day. To celebrate we cooked a massive feast - cottage pie with nachos and cheese.

Sunday 11th July - Got to the tour office at 9am so we could be given a wetsuit and snorkel gear. We were transferred to the boat and then taken into the deep water to do some Humpback Whale watching. On the way out the skipper spotted two Dugong, a mother and calf. They were really cool but weird looking. Then we saw two whales. One of them was putting on a real show for us jumping out of the water and slamming back down again. It was incredible better than we had imagined. After morning tea we went to a snorkel spot near the shore where we went snorkeling with the Manta Rays. We were literally right above them while they were feeding. Manta Rays are much bigger than we thought. Gorgeous lunch of fresh meats and salads then it was more snorkeling to see some beautiful coral. On the way back we saw 3 more Dugongs, lots of Turtles, a Tiger Shark, and an Eagle Ray. What a great day!

Mon 12th July - Driving from coral bay to free campsite further south. There was a little lost lamb at the free campsite and he was so cute. He kept baaaing trying to find his mum. The next day we drove further south towards Monkey Mia. Distances on the west coast seem so long, all the interesting bits are so spread out.

Wed 14th July - We got to shark bay and stopped off to look at the stromatolites. Then we went to Eagle Bluff where the board walk is built jutting out from the side of the cliff so you can look down into the sea and see the sharks swimming in the water below. Unfortunately we didn’t see any when we were there. After some more driving we get to Monkey Mia. We stay the night here at the monkey mia resort and get to bed after a few beers, some pool and lots of good music on the duke box. The next day we are up early to see the dolphins being fed at the sea shore. They are so cute. Then more driving south.

Friday 16th July - We went to see the pelicans being fed  first thing then visited Kalbarri National park in the morning. The roads were not sealed and it was horribly bumpy in the van so much so that we nearly turned back. The view of the gorge was nice though. In the afternoon we went horseriding. Caroline was put on a horse that just wanted to be at the front the whole time and when we were cantering Kirsty just held on for dear life and didn’t even steer as her horse knew which route it was going. That night we had fish and chips by the sea.

Saturday 17th July - Today we drove some more but stopped off at the Pink lake which was really cool. We didn’t believe that it would actually be pink but it was so we were very impressed and had a picnic lunch in the car by the lake. We drove through the town of Northampton next and had our photo by the sign. We finally arrived in Cervantes and decided to go for a quite drink and some food. Well……….we got a drink and then decided we would rather have some more drinks before we eat. Then a few more. We finally decide we are ready to eat but then they tell us it is too late and the kitchen is closed. So we have another drink and then decide to go and find some food but nowhere in this tiny place is open. We get back to the caravan park and things get better as we discover they have shut and locked all the gates for security. Not to be detered Caroline gives Kirsty a leg up over the 8 foot high fence. Kirsty gets onto the top of the fence but then cant get down the other side and ends up flipping over and falling in a heap onto the floor, luckily on the inside of the fence so she is in the park. Caroline is now stuck over the other side but after a few seconds she magically appears on the right side. To this day neither of us know how she got over by herself.

Sunday 18th July - After waking up and wondering how the hell we had got back into the camp site the previous night, we went to investigate seeing as Caroline was convinced she had climbed a tree to get in. There was no trees anywhere near the fence and the fence was like 8 foot tall. We think she must have flown over lol it’s a mystery. We then go to visit the pinnacles which were quite cool and then drive to Perth. Woohoo back to civilization again. We stay at a caravan park in Midland, Perth.

Monday 19th July - We went to Freemantle prison and took a tour throughout the prison. We learnt lots of history and heard really cool stories about the guys that had been held there. We enjoyed it so much that we took another tour. A different one that showed us other parts of the prison, but it wasn’t as good as the first coz the man was a bit weird and was trying to get us to meet him for a drink afterwards. Instead we went back to out caravan park and had a bottle of wine together.

Tuesday 20th July - Another day trip yay. Perth zoo was the destination for today. We saw loads of animals and spent ages watching the orangutans wishing we were back in Borneo with our little ginger friends.

Wed 21st July - For the next couple of days and nights we just parked up near the beach and watched the surfers and chilled out while not spending money J

Friday 23rd July - Today we met up with a friend we had met in Sydney called Sophie. We went out for lunch at Carvers and celebrated Christmas in July (an Australian thing) with a lovely Christmas dinner.

We spent the next week camped in our van outside the house of Sophies great aunt Doreen who was about 80. It was so nice. They made us feel like part of the family. We spent the days playing ball or at the park and spent the evenings doing jigsaw puzzles at Doreens and watching tele by the fire. We had dinner inside with them a couple of times and it was so nice. We got introduced to all the family and taken around their houses and had tea and biscuits as if we were long lost relatives. We even watched one of her grandkids play football (AFL) and went to her bowls club. It was a great week for us being in a real house and eating homemade scones and jam yum yum.

Friday 30th July - We left early that morning as we had 6 days to drive all the way from Perth to Melbourne. We drove down the coastal road to Walpole where we went to see the giant tingle trees. The trunks were wide enough to drive a car through, eszxamazing!. The next day we drove through the beautiful town of esperance and got some lovely views of the blue sea. Each night we camped up in free campsites at the side of the road. It is really getting chilly now so we are making fires outside the van and sitting next to them to eat. We drove across the nullarbar plains which is the longest straight piece of road in the world and has no water supply so we had to make sure we were well equipped. It took two long days of boring driving to cross it. The most exciting bit was the border checkpoint where we had to chuck out all our fruit and veg so that fruit flies wouldn’t travel into the next state. We drove the Great Ocean road which was pretty amazing especially as we saw it at sunset and into the early evening.

Wednesday 4th August - We drove the last of the ocean road and then we boarded a ferry to get us to Cranbourne (the location of our new job) without driving through Melbourne City Centre. Final we arrive at our new job.

For the next two months we lived and worked at the cottage. Not what we expected - cold, wet muddy, 60 yrs old boss that is so particular and wont stop talking. In their family there was him, his wife and their 12 year old daughter who would complain if they didn’t fly first class on their holidays to Fiji. Our accommodation  that was supposed to be a two bedroom self contained cottage was a small metal donga not secured to the floor. While his house was huge! Plus he has another house on the east coast and a caravan and 7 cars and a boat and a swimming pool and loads of horses. The kitchen was outside under a shelter and the bathroom could only be accessed through one of the bedrooms so while we were there with other girls we had to walk through their bedroom at night to go to the toilet. Also the television didn’t work which we later found out was because he hadn’t attached an arial as he didn’t want people finishing early to watch tv. There was no curtains in the living room and none up in the bathroom so that he could keep an eye on us all the time!

For our first week and a half there was another girl there with us, Corin, who had been there 3 months. She was great and taught us how to lunge the horses and showed us everything we needed to do each day. There was also another lady who lived in the cottage next to us on Chris’s 20 acre property. Her name was Julie and she was lovely. She rides race horses and told us of a paid job going at the stables she works at. So two days later, the day after Corin left, we started a job mucking out stables from 5-7:30 in the morning six days a week. Chris was not impressed by this. He told us we couldn’t take the job and him and his wife threatened Julie. We said it was our free time and that we could do what we want and he said we should be on call for him 24/7. He also said that they were providing our food and we would be eating their food to keep us going at the other job - joker!. The rest of our time there we were told that we ate more than any other backpackers had. But Caroline was the smallest girl they had ever had there. I guess fat people don’t eat much lol.  He couldn’t control us so we carried on going to our job and apart from the occasional snide comment that we were tired because we went in the house at 6pm in the eve when we had started for him at 8am and only had half hour lunch, he never mentioned it.

The horses were the only good bit of the job and there were 18 for  us to look after. We would lunge them and some of them were so badly behaved you had to wear a helmet to lunge. Caroline loved riding them as they knew advanced dressage moves and Julie would give her free lessons so she has improved so much. Kirsty was given free lessons from Caroline, Corin and Julie, but is still too scared to canter on her own so we think she should stick to rugby (she feels its safer lol).  Her confidence has improved so much though. When we left the worst thing was leaving the horses and Chris’s dog Cody who loved us and followed us around all day and slept outside our front door.

We have so many stories to tell that we couldn’t possibly write them all here.

Monday 4th October - Today we left the cottage yay! At 2 we finally left and drove over to Moorooduc where we will now be living and working full time. We parked our van up under the shelter and set up camp. We put our carpet down outside the van and set up our table and chairs.

For the next 2 months we worked full time at Carringbush park racing yard. We started at 5am and finished between 10 and 12 each day. We worked Monday to Saturday with only Sundays as our day off. It is very physical work as we have to muck out 35 large stables every morning. Our hands and fingers ache all the time from holding the rakes and Caroline cant straighten her fingers as they are molded to the shape of the rake lol. Our backs hurt at first but they don’t now so we must have more muscle in them. We also give them hay and water. Once all the stables are done we have to put some of the young and/or naughty horses on the horse walker. We have to put gear on some of the young ones so they get used to wearing it ready for when they get ridden. Some of them have not been broken in so it is very difficult trying to get them to do things as they are not used to it and get scared. Caroline has been bitten and kicked on numerous occasions as she gets the naughtiest ones. Kirsty has been trapped inside the float against the wall by a horse who was going nuts.

Caroline has taken horses to the trials a lot and has even gone to the races as a strapper a few times. Once she had to travel 5 hours with a horse to the races who then lost and she had to travel another 5 hours back, long day. We have bet on a few of the horses here but havent won any money yet. We never seem to bet when the horses actually win.

While we have been here we have been to the beach a few times and had a weekend away at phillip island where we saw the worlds smallest penguins. We have also met up with our friend Amy from Borneo and been around her horse. She has so many animals and a swimming pool and a spa and sauna, its like going to a resort for us. We have been into Melbourne a couple of times and watched some show jumping at Equitana. We have also been to see Harry Potter at the cinema and been to a Christmas festival with carols and fireworks!

We finish work here on the 4th of December and will be going to Amy’s birthday party for the weekend then making our way slowly round the coast to Sydney to meet some friends for Christmas.
